LMCGoldsmithRIBAResearchTrust2015. RSA Student Design Awards. Challenge and scope The built environment can be a challenging place for all of us. Disabled people in particular still face considerable environmental, attitudinal and organisational barriers – see campaigns by Attitude is Everything, Level Playing Field, Muscular Dystrophy Trailblazers and Leonard Cheshire Disability. Yet there are also unique and exceptional examples of inclusively designed buildings and places, including the Library of Birmingham – 2015 winner of the Civic Trust Selwyn Goldsmith Universal Design Award, and of course, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, which is developing into one of the most accessible and inclusive neighbourhoods in the UK.

Inclusive design goes well beyond simply satisfying the requirements of government legislation or regulations. Inclusive design is a dynamic ever-developing field, and your creativity and passion can help to push the boundaries even further. In approaching this brief you may wish to think about the following: Supported by. RIBAAppointmentAgreements20102012revision AdrianDobson. Architects appointment. To help develop this article, click 'Edit this article'. Although buildings in the UK are commonly designed by people who are not architects, the term ‘architect’ itself is protected by the Architects Act 1997 which established the Architects Registration Board (ARB). Only qualified individuals that are registered with the ARB can offer their services as architects. Architects are commonly appointed by a process of: Recommendation, for example, one consultant may recommend others, which can save time for the client and make it easier to establish collaborative working practices.

Research and interview. There are a number of sources of information to help clients find an appropriate architect for their project: It is important that an architect's appointment is set out in writing as soon as is practically possible, defining the scope of services that are likely to be required and the fee that will be charged for those services. RAF Fighter Tactics 1939-41 It would be an understatement to say that RAF Fighter Command was poorly placed in terms of its tactics at the beginning of the Second World War. Britain had not been involved in a large conflict involving air-to-air combat since 1918, and many of the valuable lessons learned during the First World War had now been forgotten, erroneously dismissed as the tactics used in a bygone era and therefore no longer relevant. Perhaps the most key strength of the fighter aircraft was its maneuverability; its freedom to move with speed and agility to engage an enemy aircraft.

With war approaching in the 1930s, the hierarchy of Fighter Command now believed that this speed and agility was obsolete and that the key to breaking up mass formations of enemy bombers was rigid, regimented close formation flying. This has already been mentioned in a previous article, but let us examine it in a little more detail. “Number One Section, fire… go.” Always keep a sharp lookout. The Real Review: a bi-monthly architecture magazine by Jack Self. About this project Risks and challenges Before we decided to run this Kickstarter we carefully assessed the six major challenges involved in getting a publication to press: direction, commissioning, editorial, design, print production and publicity. Direction, editorial and commissioning One of the biggest costs of a magazine is the actual words. Many publications try to push down the word-rate and pay their authors little or nothing. We believe in well-paid journalism, but as we’re starting we will not have the cash-flow immediately.

Publicity We have established an exclusive media partnership with ArchDaily.com – the largest design website in the world, with over 9 million unique visitors per month. Design and print production We are working with Britain’s foremost design studio, OK-RM, a collaborative practice engaged in partnerships with artists, curators, editors, architects, designers and institutions.

I've felt awful -- awful beyond all -- but I never felt that one other person could enter that room and cure what was bothering me...or that any number of people could enter that room. In other words, loneliness is something I've never been bothered with because I've always had this terrible itch for solitude. It's being at a party, or at a stadium full of people cheering for something, that I might feel loneliness. Watch For No Good Reason Online Free Putlocker. Intellectuals and power: A conversation between Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze. This is a transcript of a 1972 conversation between the post-structuralist philosophers Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, which discusses the links between the struggles of women, homosexuals, prisoners etc to class struggle, and also the relationship between theory, practice and power This transcript first appeared in English in the book ‘Language, Counter-Memory, Practice: selected essays and interviews by Michel Foucault’ edited by Donald F.

MICHEL FOUCAULT: A Maoist once said to me: "I can easily understand Sartre's purpose in siding with us; I can understand his goals and his involvement in politics; I can partially understand your position, since you've always been concerned with the problem of confinement. But Deleuze is an enigma. " GILLES DELEUZE: Possibly we're in the process of experiencing a new relationship between theory and practice. In this sense theory does not express, translate, or serve to apply practice: it is practice.

Shanghai studio Neri&Hu has completed its largest project to date – a total exterior and interior overhaul of a hotel in Zhengzhou, China, featuring a new facade resembling a pile of glass boxes and an entrance surrounded by a forest of bronze columns (+ slideshow). Architects Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu developed the redesign of the 25-storey Le Meridien hotel around the concept of an "archive" for artefacts relating to the cultural history of Henan Province.

This is expressed on the interior and exterior through use of materials and patterns appropriate to the region, as well as in the arrangement of spaces. "The archive seemed like the one metaphor that could carry through all aspects of the design, from building to interior to artwork to finish," Rossana Hu told Dezeen. A series of projecting glazed boxes added to the original concrete shell give the hotel's facades a more varied aesthetic than the neighbouring monolithic tower blocks. The Survey of London. The Survey of London Volume XLII.11 Southern Kensington: Kensington Square to Earl's Court Athlone Press – 502pp - £55 An addict with a new volume of the Survey of London is like Kenneth Grahame's Mole with a picnic basket. Rifling its contents is sheer pleasure all the way, and even if he thinks that he knows what is going to be in it, it always spills out surprises. The latest volume is no exception, even though it covers an area which contains few distinguished buildings and a good many depressing ones. The image of Earl's Court is not one which raises the spirits.

But anything and everything is grist to the Survey mill. Among the most interesting areas the history of which the Survey works out in detail for the first time is that now occupied by Kensington Court. Grant was mixed up with Second-Empire finance, and there was a strong whiff of Second-Empire opulence about his house. Mark Girouard is the author of Cities and People (Yale University Press, 1985).

Lemon Squeezy: Design Tendencies after the Juicy Salif. Design as a functional activity ended with Philippe Starks Juicy Salif. This iconic lemon squeezer thrust its sharp tripod legs into the heart of Modernism. From this point on, designers would never be able to escape the inherent useless-ness of their activities. As bitter juice trickled down the sculpted chromed surface it dripped anywhere but where it was intended and it stung the profession with its painful lesson: Use is Useless.

Instead of helping us to do things, post-Salif design is a way of helping us understand things. Design helps us to navigate our relationship to contemporary context. It allows us to explore complexities through mute, wordless sensations of touch, texture and form – through materials and technologies of production. Design allows us to feel qualities of the contemporary before they are fully formed articulate ideas – like finding your way in the dark.

It is most obvious in the proto modernism of the arts and crafts movement. Klein Dythams Leaf Chapel.
