Common-Core Math in Practice. This special report—the latest in an ongoing series on high-priority issues in K-12 education—looks at how the Common Core State Standards are changing instruction in mathematics. It explores how schools and teachers are adjusting their practices and shows where there are gaps in support and understanding. Schools and teachers face complex challenges and competing demands as they work toward implementing the new math standards. November 10, 2014 - Education Week The common core's emphasis on fractions as points on a number line offers a window into the framework's divergence from past conventions.

Under the Common Core State Standards in mathematics, fractions instruction extends across grades 3 through 6. The common standards for math put a heavy emphasis on coherent instruction, prompting many districts to find ways to familiarize teachers with standards for grade levels beyond their own. William G. Professional Development Collections support the growing needs of elementary educators.

These skill and knowledge-building collections are designed around core themes and provide a set of carefully selected resources, teaching supports and a discussion area. This collection aims to shed light on Practice Standard 2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively, and offers instructional strategies for helping students make sense of quantities and their relationships in problem situations.

These resources provide meaningful ways to support children as they learn to represent problem contexts with numbers and symbols, and then re-interpret the numbers and symbols in terms of the original problem. A companion Classroom Collection includes resources to help teachers develop this practice with their students. This collection assists teachers as they integrate Mathematical Practice Standard 3 into their classroom routines.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The University of Arizona - Institute for Mathematics & Education. The Common Core State Standards in mathematics were built on progressions: narrative documents describing the progression of a topic across a number of grade levels, informed both by research on children's cognitive development and by the logical structure of mathematics. These documents were spliced together and then sliced into grade level standards. From that point on the work focused on refining and revising the grade level standards.

The early drafts of the progressions documents no longer correspond to the current state of the standards. It is important to produce up-to-date versions of the progressions documents. They can explain why standards are sequenced the way they are, point out cognitive difficulties and pedagogical solutions, and give more detail on particularly knotty areas of the mathematics. This would be useful in teacher preparation and professional development, organizing curriculum, and writing textbooks. Steal These Tools. The Museum of Mathematics.
