(RIA Novosti / Yuri Streltsov) Ukraine’s acting Interior Minister is threatening to resolve “in 48 hours” the situation in eastern regions where administrations of at least two cities are controlled by protesters demanding a nationwide referendum on the state structure. Arsen Avakov told journalists on Wednesday that the coup-imposed government is ready to use force in the mutinous eastern regions. "There are two solutions: a political one through negotiations or through force,” the minister said on the margins of a government meeting. “For those who want dialogue, we propose talks and a political solution. The minister informed that a special police task force from western regions of Ukraine has already arrived in Donetsk, Lugansk and Kharkov, cities where protests against the new government in Kiev have been continuing for weeks now. This comes after the rally proclaimed independence of the region from Kiev. Police reportedly used fire-hoses, stun grenades, and tear gas to push the crowd back from the building. In response, protesters threw several Molotov cocktails at the building and set a pile of tires on fire. The blaze soon spread to the first floor of the building. Activists at the scene said the law enforcement officers who used force against protesters had been deployed from western Ukraine.
Ukraine Approves NATO War Games, Russia Ends Gas Discount. Ukrainian parliament approved don Tuesday a series of joint military exercises with NATO countries, as Russia announced it was ending a gas discount enjoyed by Kiev.
"This is a good opportunity to develop our armed forces," acting defense minister Mykhailo Koval told Verkhovna Rada lawmakers ahead of the 235-0 vote. Ukraine is not a NATO member and its new Western-backed leaders have vowed not to push for closer relations with the Brussels-based military alliance -- a bloc that has been viewed with deep mistrust by Moscow since the Cold War. But the ex-Soviet nation did form a "distinctive partnership" with the Alliance in 1997 and has been staging joint exercises with its state members ever since. The exercises approved on Tuesday would see Ukraine conduct two sets of military exercises with the United States this summer that have prompted disquiet in Russia in previous years. (RIA Novosti / Andrey Stenin) The West has condemned the upcoming referendum in Crimea as “illegitimate” and is preparing sanctions against Russia. However, the West’s seemingly random policy on other referendums hints at a double standard in their governments’ rhetoric. Crimea will vote Sunday whether to remain an autonomous region in Ukraine or to join with Russia. In the past the West has not batted an eyelid when countries sought to hold referendums and in some cases actively supported them.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday called for an OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) investigation into who was behind the deaths of dozens of people in Kiev last month in attacks by snipers, saying the truth could no longer be covered up. Lavrov's comments came after Estonia's top diplomat told EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton in a phone call leaked this week that the then-Ukrainian opposition to president Viktor Yanukovych may have been involved in the attacks.
"The latest information about the so-called snipers case can no longer be covered up," Lavrov told a news conference in Moscow with his Tajik counterpart.
