We went to see Damsels in distress at the BFI the other week (the film, by the way, AMAZING, watch it if you can), directed by the almost-forgotten Whit Stillman, who was one of those awesome filmmakers from the 90s who made personal, different films that were really formative in my ideas and FEELS about cinema.

So here, have a list of my very personal pick of almost-forgotten indie movies from the 90s. These are what I consider to be underrated films - the 90s have plenty of films more awesome than these that have gained wide and just recognition but that I would still recommend to anybody, like In the soup, Living in Oblivion, Hal Hartley's whole run of the decade, The Daytrippers, everything John Sayles (though perhaps Limbo is in need of some celebration), Swingers, or the memorable hits of cult black comedy The last supper and Very Bad Things. I do not worry too much about the future of Robert DeNiro's A Bronx Tale as it seems to be gaining a lot of late fame. 12. 11. 10. 9. 8. 7. Best films. Matthew Barney: 'My work is not for everyone' I stand on the dock waiting for Matthew Barney.

Matthew Barney: 'My work is not for everyone'

I have a sniper's view of the UN building, downstream on the far shore of the East River, while the Chrysler Building, which has featured in Barney's films, gleams against the skyline. Doomy, ponderous post-rock music echoes through the cavernous studio behind me, along with drilling and banging where unseen assistants work away. There is no art to be seen, just shipping crates and big, tantalising lumps covered in tarpaulin receding into the gloom. The studio is at the end of a street in Long Island City, Queens, a place of used car lots, loading bays and anonymous industry.

When Barney shows up we retreat to a big table in an upstairs office. Over five hours long, River of Fundament is a liquid spectacle of words and music, mercury and sulphur, molten iron, blood and faeces, polluted industrial rivers in New York and Detroit, a river in Idaho where sockeye salmon go to spawn and die. BFI London Film Festival 2012: 'The Wall' review. Well-known in her native Germany, Martina Gedeck is perhaps best recalled for her role in Oscar-winning Stasi drama The Lives of Others (2006).

BFI London Film Festival 2012: 'The Wall' review

However, with a sprinkling of luck this may soon change, as recent New Wave Films acquisition The Wall (Die Wand, 2012) gears up for a 2013 theatrical release thanks to a deserved 'Dare' section slot at the London Film Festival. 'Daring' would be an apt term to describe Austrian director Julian Pölsler's high concept drama, which blends the very best of elements Tarkovsky-style sci-fi with sumptuous vistas, courtesy of the same rolling slopes that hosted Robert Wise's The Sound of Music (1965). Based on Marlen Haushofer's bestselling 1960s novel of the same name, The Wall follows the tragic Kafkaesque tale of an unnamed woman (Gedeck) who finds herself trapped - not quite in her own body - but in the immediate woodlands and valleys surround her Alpine hunting lodge.
