Globalization or World Society? How to conceive of modern society

Text version corrected and adapted from the Library of Russia. Annotations by Erik Empson No one, I think, will dispute the fact of a global system. Whether we watch the BBC news in Brisbane, Bangkok or Bombay, its programme preview indicates Hong Kong time and other times so that we can calculate what to see and when to see it wherever we are. Moreover, the simultaneity of changes all over the world deserves attention. They facilitate communication, but they do not serve as concepts. This is not simply a terminological question. My main point will be that, throughout the tradition and in modern times as well, the concept of society proclaims a specific combination of difference and identity, of differentiation and reconstructed unity, or, in traditional language, of the parts and the whole. My Profile

“Prosumer” is a portmanteau formed by combining the words professional and consumer. Prosumers are hobbyists who’ve reached a level of sophistication that rivals those of professionals. I’m sure we’ve all heard tracks from online producers that compete with what’s on the radio. Professional-grade microphones, pre-amps and recording software became affordable to the working-class citizen. Although many of us feel we can prepare for our future by thinking, acting, and learning using present methods and values, nothing is farther from the truth – especially in today’s rapidly changing world. A newborn child enters a world not of his or her own making. Guanxi. For the autonomous region, see Guangxi.

Guanxi describes the basic dynamic in personalized networks of influence, and is a central idea in Chinese society. In Western media, the pinyin romanization of this Chinese word is becoming more widely used instead of the two common translations—"connections" and "relationships"—as neither of those terms sufficiently reflects the wide cultural implications that guanxi describes.[1] Guanxi has a major influence on the management of businesses based in China, and also those owned by overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia, known as the bamboo network.[2] Description and usage[edit] At its most basic, guanxi describes a personal connection between two people in which one is able to prevail upon another to perform a favor or service, or be prevailed upon.

Guanxi refers to the benefits gained from social connections and usually extends from extended family, school friends, workmates and members of common clubs or organizations. Usage examples[edit] How to Handle a Crazymaker. A mother gave her son two ties for an upcoming family occasion. She then got mad at him when he showed up at the party wearing one of them. She wanted him to wear the other one. Years later after the son had grown up and married, he presented his wife with two dresses for their anniversary dinner.

He then got upset with her for wearing the wrong dress of the two. A few years later, after the couple had a daughter, his wife accused the daughter of hugging the wrong parent first—even if the little girl switched whom she hugged each time.

How Different Cultures Understand Time. Question. General. Eat sometime. 2015. Design hinges a natural-artificial continuum through humans’ natural capacity to produce what we call ‘the artificial’.

At a time when human activity is threatening biodiversity and causing severe climate change, it becomes obvious that natural and artificial systems can no longer be conceived in isolation but only in relation to each other – or indeed as one. The coupling of natural and artificial systems poses challenges due to its complexity and partly reveals the anthropocentrism that has traditionally characterised design. Several questions arise in this context. How can design practices embrace pluralism by recognising, in the manifestation of design itself, biological as well as cultural diversity?
