I recently found the code of a soft synth for an aborted 4kb intro inside a backup HDD and decided to modify and improve it.
While thinking about possible improvements, I’ve noticed it is hard to find a complete (and easy) documentation aimed at writing small soft synths. This is a simple attempt to provide an easy tutorial to soft synths for 4kb intros under win32 environment (but many ideas also apply to other OSes). Introduction This part will cover the base code needed to fill and play a sound buffer with generated sound and will provide some advice about how to implement a very simple tone generator. Know your tools The tools we are going to use are: MSVC (2008 express is fine) and Audacity (a free audio recorder).
