Right: Two nude nymphs . The poses the sculptor has chosen make clear that despite the classical subject chosen, Spalmach has no interest in classical serenity and balance. Ai WeiWei "Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads" Exhibition @ Pulitzer Fountain. Famed and controversial Chinese contemporary artist Ai WeiWei will take his “Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads” exhibition to New York later this year.

Ai WeiWei "Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads" Exhibition @ Pulitzer Fountain

The multi-year, global touring show is based on WeiWei’s interpretation of the famed 12 zodiac heads designed by European Jesuits in 18th century Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong’s court. Following attacks by foreign entities in 1860, the zodiac heads originally seen in the gardens of Yuanming Yuan were stolen. In WeiWei’s own take, the artist tackles issues of fake and copied pieces in the context of real as well as questions of “looting and repatriation.” The exhibition will begin on May 2, 2011 at the Pulitzer Fountain at Grand Army Plaza which is situated near Central Park and the Plaza Hotel.

The exhibition ends July 15. What sort of things do you keep in mind when you’re creating a work like this? How are you hoping it will be received by the public? Chinese Zodiac Circle. Sculptures & Figures. Recyclart.
