Farming for the Future

As NASA's astronauts prepare to fulfill the Vision for Space Exploration with increasingly lengthy missions, scientists are trying to find a way for them to grow their own food. Plants offer a promising solution in providing food to astronauts thousands of miles from Earth. They could grow crops that would not only supplement a healthy diet, but also remove toxic carbon dioxide from the air inside their spacecraft and create life-sustaining oxygen. Since the Space Shuttle and even International Space Station expeditions are relatively short-duration endeavors, astronauts do well with physical and chemical forms of life support.

REMINERALIZE THE EARTH - Home. Our Mission is Healing The Earth! Seven Stars Farm: What Is Biodynamic? This distinction is important because although our farm is certified Biodynamic, our yogurt is made with help of certified organic milk from our organic partner farms.

Seven Stars Farm: What Is Biodynamic?

This makes our final product certified organic, but not certified Biodynamic. One way of describing biodynamics is that it’s a philosophy built upon the foundation of organics. Biodynamics. Stellar Certification - Demeter USA. Demeter USA has been providing Biodynamic® certification services since 1985.

Stellar Certification - Demeter USA

In 2002 the USDA implemented the National Organic Program to provide a uniform definition for the term “organic”. Because the Demeter Farm Standard utilizes the NOP requirements as a base minimum- upon which the additional Biodynamic requirements are built- Stellar Certification Services was formed so that Demeter certified producers could also legally label as organic. Stellar is currently both NOP and ISO-65 accredited and was one of the first organic certifiers in the world to achieve both accreditations. Seeds at Risk in AgroBusiness. Agros Technica. Gardening with a greater purpose.

Increasing urban sprawl is creating more homes for people by taking away habitats for wildlife, forcing nature's creatures to become vagabonds on the move or leaving them homeless on the streets.

Gardening with a greater purpose

According to a report from the Sierra Club, about 2.2 million acres of open space, including parks, farms and natural areas are lost to sprawl each year. However, others are fighting to reverse this damage from development by providing food, water and shelter for evicted animals, transforming their own backyards into wildlife sanctuaries. The Vertical Farm Project - Agriculture for the 21st Century and Beyond. The 72 Plant Vertical Garden. This instructable will cover the details of the Vertical Garden built for my "Hydroponic, Automated, Networking, Climate Controlled Greenhouse Project".

The 72 Plant Vertical Garden

The vertical garden is a space saving way to grow up to 72 small plants (such as lettuce, spinach, strawberries and lots of different herbs) all with the plant health benefits of hydroponics. The Vertical Garden is designed with modularity in mind, to be brought into the greenhouse and installed as a single unit, with only connection to the existing plumbing required before you're ready to grow.

The installation of additional Vertical Garden units should be quick and easy. Building a bottle tower for container gardening. Farm Hack. Factory Farming, what is factory farm? - The Issues. What You Can Do For More Information Reports and Articles In the last few decades, consolidation of food production has concentrated power in the hands of fewer and fewer corporations. This former semiconductor factory is now the world's largest indoor farm, producing 10K heads of lettuce per day. This indoor Japanese farm uses LED lights and hydroponics to produce lettuce 2.5 times faster, with just 1% of the water, when compared to an outdoor farm.

When we think about factories, and what we decry as "factory farms," we probably don't think very highly of them as being a key component in the future of agriculture, but if we can take what factories do best, such as use technology to build efficient production lines, and pair that with what nature does best, which is growing biomass from light and water and minerals, then growing food in plant factories starts to make a lot of sense.

Converting what were formerly industrial buildings into indoor farming operations, especially in urban areas and locations that aren't conducive to year-round outdoor food production, could be an excellent reuse of existing resources (the buildings themselves, the infrastructure that supports them, and their locations in or near cities) to help build a more sustainable food system.
