Littoral zone

In coastal environments the littoral zone extends from the high water mark, which is rarely inundated, to shoreline areas that are permanently submerged. It always includes this intertidal zone and is often used to mean the same as the intertidal zone. However, the meaning of "littoral zone" can extend well beyond the intertidal zone. [CAIRO] Date palm leaves — currently a waste product of date farming — could be used to remove pharmaceutical chemicals and dyes from hospital wastewater, say researchers from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in Oman.

Oman's chemists use palm leaves for water treatment

The first hospital wastewater treatment pilot project is due to start in Oman early next year, and scientists are working to use this technology in both drinking water filters and for industrial wastewater treatment. Since 2010, the analytical and environmental research group at SQU's chemistry department has been working to establish a hospital wastewater treatment unit. The unit would treat wastewater — usually loaded with microorganisms and pharmaceutical chemicals — before its release into the sewers, and potentially produce water that could be used in crop irrigation. Using dehydrated carbon made from waste date leaves instead is greener, cheaper and more sustainable, the scientists say. There are doubts about whether this technique can be effectively rolled out, however. Water Bearers. Look to Women To Curb Middle East Water Problems. A pair of Netanya high school pupils who developed a system using solar rays to disinfect and clean water supplies so they are suitable for drinking won the Intel-Israel 15th Annual Young Scientists Competition on Tuesday.

Avishai Katko and Maya Braun of Sharett High School found a way to expose polluted water to ultraviolet light using renewable energy at low cost. The device, if produced commercially, could be used in any home, the pupils said. The system is modular, mobile and suitable for use in places with a severe shortage of potable water that also enjoy sunlight most of the year. The competition was held at Jerusalem’s Bloomfield Science Museum, and the award ceremony was held at the Knesset. President Shimon Peres will receive the top winners privately at his temporary residence, as the President’s Residence is being renovated. Rural Poverty Portal Water Management. The WaterWheel — Wello Water. In September 2011, the Wello team arrived in India with the goal of answering one big question: “How might we improve the experience of collecting, storing, and using water?”

the WaterWheel — Wello Water

Over the course of the past 15 months, we’ve interviewed over 1500 community members, practitioners and experts, spent countless hours designing and prototyping in the field, and carried hundreds of liters of water. We developed a wide range of concepts and designs in collaboration with the WaterWheel’s intended users, identified the features that were most important to them, and developed a prototype. Eisenia fetida (older spelling: foetida), known under various common names such as redworm, brandling worm, panfish worm, trout worm, tiger worm, red wiggler worm, red californian earth worm, etc., is a species of earthworm adapted to decaying organic material.

Eisenia fetida

These worms thrive in rotting vegetation, compost, and manure; they are epigean. They are rarely found in soil, instead preferring conditions that are inimical to some other worms. In this trait they resemble Lumbricus rubellus. They have groups of bristles (called setae) on each segment that move in and out to grip nearby surfaces as the worms stretch and contract their muscles to push themselves forward or backward. Eisenia fetida worms are used for vermicomposting. Odor When roughly handled, an eisenia fetida exudes a pungent liquid, thus the specific name foetida meaning foul-smelling.
