Sometimes the results are absolutely disastrous. Sometimes they're pretty good. Sometimes they even overshadow the work of the band that made them famous. Here are ten of the best. 10. Slash Slash's recent solo album — the first under his own name, if you don't count the Slash's Snakepit albums — drew its fare share of controversy over some of the guest vocalists. 9. On an Island It's a well-known fact that David Gilmour originally intended the track that would eventually become “Comfortably Numb” to be a solo track, not a Pink Floyd song. 8. The Nightfly Steely Dan co-founder Fagen's first solo album was a mostly optimistic, sunny affair — certainly a world away from his aging-and-death-obsessed 2006 album, Morph The Cat. 7.
Factory Tour: Inside Martin Guitars. Here we have some pre-bent wooden strips that will be used for binding on the front and back edges of certain guitar models. We love us some real wood binding. Classy. The binding is not always made out of wood, in fact most guitars use plastic binding, and that is what this worker is gluing in the channel that is perfectly cut into the edges. After she installs the binding, she’ll used tape to hold it in while it dries. Here are some guitar bodies after binding installation, while the glue dries.
Here are the sanding stations where all the bodies are being sanded by hand to prep them for finish. We didn’t get to see much of the process Martin uses to spray their finish on the guitars, but this is the result. Not everything at Martin is done by hand. Meanwhile, the necks are getting some attention. Hanging on the wall here we can see some templates used by the builders to ensure a consistent feel to each neck.
