Warming pans, bed wagons, bed warmers with coals or wood. Warming pans: heating the bed with embers from the fire Hanging a warming pan near the hearth is not just a decorator's idea. The fireplace was always a sensible place for it, so it could easily be filled with glowing coals or wood embers before being taken away to warm the bed. Using a hot stone or brick heated at the fireside is one way of carrying warmth from the hearth into bed. By the 16th century people were also taking pans filled with smouldering fuel from the fire itself. The well-known brass or copper warming pan on a handle was not the only way of doing this.

There were also wooden frames designed to hold pots of fuel inside the bedclothes. A warming pan, sometimes known as a bed warmer nowadays, was a valuable family possession handed down from generation to generation, but not so expensive that it was only for the rich. But not all warming pans had pierced patterns. Warming pans on a handle were designed for moving up and down the bed before someone got into it. MarieDiena. Cess_jagger_01_h.jpg 590×405 pixels. Space Age Meets Flat Pack: Miles Keller's Satellite-Inspired Pendant. House in Izumi-Ohmiya by Tato Architects. Japanese studio Tato Architects have converted a warehouse in Osaka into a house where residents can climb up the walls. Designed for a couple who enjoy rock-climbing in their spare time, the two-storey house has a sloping wooden wall on the first floor with affixed treads for climbing practice. A double-height living and dining room stretches across one half of the residence, where a ladder provides a shortcut up and down from the master bedroom.

During the renovation the architects also re-clad the building in galvanised steel and replaced a pair of large shutters with square glazing panels. If you're interested in rock-climbing walls, why not check some other stories we've featured about them here? Photography is by Satoshi Shigeta. Here's the full project description from Tato Architects: House in Izumi-Ohmiya, a project converting a warehouse into residence.

The inside walls are designed in several leaned parts for them to attach some instruments to practice bouldering. Treehouse Hammocks & Hanging Hugs. "At age 17, day dreaming in chemistry class, I was struck by the realization that my life needed direction - a mission to focus my passions. " Like Peter Parker bitten by a radioactive spider, Canadian Cory Richardson begins his online journal with this account of the fateful day when he underwent his superhero transformation to become MAX, committed to getting the maximum out of life. Sitting 30 feet above the ground in the treehouse he built and lived in for a week in the backyard of a Lower Topanga resident, MAX (now 26) explains what happened next.

His initial plan was to fly to Vancouver, kayak down the west coast to Central America, and then kayak back up the East Coast to his home in St. MAX often daydreamed in regular school, but loved to learn (his name also stands for "Motivational Academic Xperience"). Tree camping in America, France and the UK. Find out why tree camping could be the most romantic holiday you've ever experienced. There are a more than a few of us who think camping is boring, uncomfortable and something that requires too much effort. For those who are unimpressed with the idea of camping in general, a new concept is out to inspire you to take to the great outdoors, tree camping. That’s right, it means a tent suspended from a tree. This unusual and adventurous way of camping is becoming more popular.

Designers all over the world are competing to make the most beautiful and practical tents imaginable and some of the views they offer are simply spectacular. In California they offer portaledge camping, where you sleep in a tent suspended high above the ground. Cornwall in the UK has even started its own campsite and has branded it the ‘The Mighty Oak Tree Climbing Company’. What more is there to say, but happy camping! Nest Rest: Huge Hanging Birdhouse-Shaped Hut for Humans. Tree house meets bird house, with a dash of hammock thrown into the mix. While it is not large enough to house the amenities of a true tree home, it is certainly a step up from a simple outdoor couch or recliner – and can be hung at a variety of heights. The resemblance goes more than skin deep, with a woven wood-like structure that parallels the way in which nests are built in nature. ? The result is a semi-enclosed, seclusion-granting space to relax that nonetheless breathes (though, to do so, sacrifices potential rain protection).

Almost as neat as the organic design by Dedon itself are the suggested implementations. Some are a bit fanciful, but others seem realistic assuming you have access to a large and sturdy tree. Not that you necessarily have to hang it, but it clearly is much more successful as a suspended? Structure. Japanese Tree House Designed By HSWSG - Architecture Things. Pin Pres by OOO My Design. Here's a similar storage system to the bicycle showroom we published this morning, this time for a kid's playroom. Created by OOO My Design, the rods of Pin Pres slide in and out so toys and books can put away simply by pushing them into the surface, but you might spend more time playing with it than tidying up. See the same system applied to retail design here and a wardrobe you throw things at here. Here are some more details from OOO My Design: Pin Pres is a kid’s room shelf that makes the act of sorting up the room a playful experience where the shelf adopts its form to the toys, books and other things that are being stored.

Its the only shelf that will make your kid actually want to clean up and de-clutter the room! Pin Pres has won Josep Ros furniture design competition. Homage to Karl by Patrycja Domanska and Felix Gieselmann. This high chair by Vienna designers Patrycja Domanska and Felix Gieselmann gives coffeehouse patrons a view over the heads of others. Entitled Homage to Karl, the chair is designed in tribute to Austrian author Karl Kraus, who is said to have written much of his literature in Viennese cafes whilst observing day-to-day activity.

The chair was presented during Vienna Design Week 2011 as part of the coffeehouse exhibition The Great Viennese Café: A Laboratory, to which eight designers contributed furniture and objects. Sitters climb a wooden ladder to get onto the chair and can place their drinks onto or inside two attached boxes that also serve as an armrest. You can see more stories from Vienna Design Week here, including another temporary coffeehouse. Here's a little more text from the designers: "Homage to Karl" by Patrycja Domanska and Felix Gieselmann The Viennese coffee house is a special institution, whose meaning outreaches the sum of its coffee variations.
