The Signal: Digital Preservation. Archives, libraries and other collecting organizations are in the midst of a staff revolution. The digital age is driving a demand for employees who are comfortable and creative with technology. As someone who hires and supervises staff in a digitally-oriented environment I know this first hand. Test Your Skill, by Spatch, on Flickr I often hear from students and others with questions about the skills they need to compete in the job market. What programming languages should I learn? How much do I need to know about specific digital formats? “No, no–those are the wrong questions!” That’s what I want to shout when I hear this line of inquiry. Let me say that expertise with programming, formats and standards is, of course, very important.
Related to this is an ability to bridge two distinct social camps: the highly technical and the highly not-technical. Pacman expands his palette, by Aram Sinnreich, on Flickr Archivists and librarians need to clearly explain what they do and why they do it. Full List - ALL TIME 100 Novels - TIME. Welcome to the massive, anguished, exalted undertaking that is the ALL TIME 100 books list. The parameters: English language novels published anywhere in the world since 1923, the year that TIME Magazine began, which, before you ask, means that Ulysses (1922) doesn’t make the cut. In May, Time.com posted a similar list, of 100 movies picked by our film critics, Richard Corliss and Richard Schickel. This one is chosen by me, Richard Lacayo, and my colleague Lev Grossman, whom we sometimes cite as proof that you don’t need to be named Richard to be hired as a critic at TIME, though apparently it helps.
Just ask our theater critic, Richard Zoglin. For the books project, Grossman and I each began by drawing up inventories of our nominees. Even so, there are many titles we couldn’t fit here that we’re still anguishing over. This project, which got underway in January, was not just a reading effort. There were also first time discoveries. Lists like this one have two purposes. Waterfall Picture Guide - All the Waterfall Information You'll Ever Need. 50 Things Everyone Should Know How To Do. Last Updated Jun 2, 2011 8:28 AM EDT Want your resume to get attention? Then you need to write something that will separate yours from the pack. Alison Green, a management consultant who spent years as a manager of a non-profit organization, has seen thousands of resumes and knows what makes one stand out. The author of two books, How To Get a Job: Secrets of a Hiring Manager and Managing to Change the World: The Nonprofit Leader's Guide to Getting Results, she also blogs at Ask A Manager. Alison and I chose to review this resume from a BNET reader (all identifying details were removed). It illustrates some of the common mistakes hiring managers see--a boring and unnecessary objective section, extremely perfunctory descriptions of work experience and the absence of details that would show us what kind of employee this person is.
Roll your mouse over the resume to learn what is great and what could be done better. In the near future, I'll be reviewing a cover letter. For further reading: UT Bookstore. National Jukebox LOC.gov. WARNING: Historical recordings may contain offensive language. Read the disclaimer Now Playing...
