It’s February; are you still on track with your resolutions or have you fallen off the wagon? Honestly, I had the same resolutions as I do every year; do more, be present in the moment, eat healthy, and give love. I know they aren’t really resolutions, they are more like actionable items on a task list; it always works better for me this way though.

I never really fall off of any wagon so, I don’t ever have the opportunity to make myself feel guilty about not doing something specific. At the end of the day, resolutions are usually about leading a life that is better for you and for the ones you love, right? This Beautiful Beet and Berry Juice falls into my eat healthy category! I became an avid enthusiast on a trip to Kauai when I actually had access to the fresh root for the first time. I was recovering from a drastic dermatological procedure and it was not the optional sort — I had cheek skin grafted to my nose in the doctor’s effort to find a piece of my skin not invaded by basal cell skin cancer. (As an aside, if you drink this turmeric milk in the sun, be sure to wear a giant hat….)

In any case, on that Kauai trip, I needed extra care and nourishment and this is one of the ways I took care of myself — experimenting with all things turmeric. When I returned home, I found that the drink is particularly powerful as a wintertime cold and flu remedy. Is this drink bitter? The other night I asked my son if he would like another cup of “golden milk.” He responded, “Mama, I already helped myself to fourths and I’m full.” Why Turmeric Milk The Drink This milk is extremely simple. Raw Cashew Milk | Cashew Nut Milk Recipe. Oh “happy day”! I get to celebrate all things cashew. Those of you who know me, are well acquainted with my cashew addiction. Don’t be alarmed.

I assure you, it is perfectly safe, and downright delicious. I will warn you though, it is highly contagious. But be comforted in the knowledge that you can enable this addiction, without too much collateral damage. Raw foodies, vegans, and vegetarians know all too well, the joys of the miraculous cashew. Today we are going to celebrate home made raw cashew milk, which I hope you will agree, is a gift from the Gods! The best thing about making raw cashew milk, like macadamia milk, is that it is much quicker and easier to prepare than almond milk, or some of the other raw milks as that is blends very easily into a buttery, smooth texture.

I find that a 3:1 ratio yields a raw cashew milk that is rich and creamy, and the right thickness for use in soups and smoothies. Now just a side note about this recipe: I have touted this milk as "raw". Pomegranate Mojito. Sexy Fig and Lemon Fizz — My Diary of Us. I've been buying figs at the farmer's market every week. I can't get enough of their flavor or their beauty.

The colors and varieties are just so pretty that I stand there debating about which ones to get...probably making the people behind me in line a little impatient. But oh well, these are very important decisions. After all you have to pick just the right batch of figs to make sexy fig and lemon fizz cocktails! And when I tell you that these are sexy cocktails, I mean it. They are sexy in every way possible.

I'm kinda obsessed with the refreshing, not too sweet taste, and don't get me started on the pink color that you get from the bright flesh insides of the figs! If I had to drink only one cocktail for the rest of my life (and I still get to have wine) this would probably be my cocktail of choice. I'm not even going to try to persuade you to make these...they are that good. Watermelon Breeze Recipe from Hannah.

Summer Sweet Tea. It’s hot and horrendous everywhere and all I want right now is a hot dog and some sweet tea. I made the sweet tea, I’m working on hot dog logistics!

I learned how to make sweet tea where it was invented: the south. In college, I worked at a restaurant and my side work was usually to make the sweet tea and roll a bunch of silverware. Making the tea was my favorite. The way I made it was deemed “the Yankee” way and depending on who my co-workers were, there was usually a ton more sugar added as soon as I walked away. I don’t like it too sweet! I used Lipton, though I was on the hunt for Luzianne because that’s what I always used way back when. Add some lemon slices and mint and you have yourself a glass of something that is really the most refreshing thing you could possibly get on a hot summer’s day.

Ingredients Directions To a large bowl or 4 cup measuring cup, add the tea bags and sugar. Probiotic Lemonade - Modern Hippie Housewife. While some people have been on a Kombucha craze, I’ve been on a Probiotic Lemonade craze. Ok, I’ll admit it, it’s not because I necessarily like Probiotic Lemonade more, but because I haven’t been able to get my hands on a SCOBY (for all you Komucha makers our there *hint*hint*.) That being said, this lightly fermented lemonade is delicious, healthy and refreshing!

Because it’s lacto-fermented you’ll need to make basic whey first, which is super easy–don’t let this discourage you, the benefits of fermenting this beverage far outweigh the hassle of making whey. The fermentation process causes this lemonade to be rich in gut-healthy probiotics, and low in sugar, unlike traditional store-bought lemonade. Also created during the fermentation process is carbon dioxide, which causes this lemonade to be slightly carbonated. I usually let my lemonade ferment for 3 days. You need to use a slightly refined sugar for the best results.

With public excitement about White House beer fermenting such a buzz, we decided we better hop right to it. Inspired by home brewers from across the country, last year President Obama bought a home brewing kit for the kitchen. As far as we know the White House Honey Brown Ale is the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds. Since our first batch of White House Honey Brown Ale, we've added the Honey Porter and have gone even further to add a Honey Blonde this past summer. Photo by Holly A. Heyser April is a wonderful month. Flowers are everywhere, fishing is getting into gear and the summer garden is laden with promise. Foraging can be a little thin in my neck of the woods, however, as the greens are starting to go as the weather warms, But there is one delight to be had: Elderflowers. Finding the buttercream flowers isn’t too tough: Elderberries grow everywhere near rivers, and the American River is loaded with bushes big and small. I’ve never seen them before April in Northern California, but they bloom even earlier in SoCal, and in the Southeast. Keep in mind you are looking for blue or black elderberries, not red elderberries.

Photo by Hank Shaw Keep in mind that an elderberry bush is a large plant, and can even grow into a small tree. Only choose the most beautiful flower heads; you don’t want flowers that have yet to open or are past their prime. It does look like lemonade, doesn’t it? Why Don’t You Make Me… Every October my taste buds are delightfully pleased when the likes of Starbucks and Coffee Bean release their seasonal sips.

Whether it’s a peppermint flavored mocha or an eggnog latte, I’m always a sucker for hot drinks and sweet treats. While store-bought specialty drinks will run you anywhere from 300 to 500 calories for about $4 a pop, homemade versions are healthier, just as satisfying and practically free! XO Lauren. Homemade Chai from Scratch — Oh, How Civilized.

The best chai I've ever had was made from scratch by my friend's mother-in-law. She's indian and after explaining that "chai" means "tea" (so "chai tea" becomes a redundant "tea tea"), she served me the most delicious chai. It was full of flavor with the milk and sugar mellowing out any harsh spice notes. I've been working on my own chai blend through trial and error. After two weeks of testing and consuming two cups of chai per day, here's my recipe, which I must say, is pretty tasty.
