When you've lived in Arizona your whole life, you learn to appreciate unusual things like clouds, rain...and weather in general. Especially in the summers when it's so hot out for months on end, you welcome the cool breezes after a monsoon thunderstorm. Ever since I was a kid, I've been obsessed with weather. I used to watch lightning out my window with my brother when we were little.
I have pictures of clouds I took while in high school. And now I chase storms. The summers in Arizona bring the monsoon thunderstorms, and they are a blast to chase. We get amazing clouds, awesome dust storms and serious amounts of lightning. Miguel Balbás. Novelist Samantha Shannon on The Bone Season. Samantha Shannon photographed by Victoria Hely-Hutchinson. I’ve never had a supernatural experience,” says 21-year-old Samantha Shannon from her desk in a small pink room in her mother’s home just outside London. “I’ve been tempted to maybe have a tarot-card reading, but I don’t know if I’d necessarily want to know.”
Instead, her inspiration for The Bone Season, the ambitious first novel in a projected seven-part series to be published by Bloomsbury, came from an internship with literary agent David Godwin the summer after her first year at Oxford. Godwin had recently passed on Shannon’s first book, about an alien falling in love with a human girl, which Shannon started writing when she was 15. And yet Shannon parlayed Godwin’s rejection into a two-week job at his agency in the Seven Dials area of London, where, on the way to the office, she passed by a store that sold crystal balls. Instead, he read the draft in about three days. Shannon has since been lauded as “the next J. Samantha Shannon The Bone Season. Photographed by Eva K. Salvi “I always had a big imagination,” says Samantha Shannon.
“When I was a kid, I’d think up sequels to my favorite films and books or short stories before I went to sleep.” She’s not alone there. In childhood, we all had our little imaginary dream worlds populated by favorite characters and our own inventions. The difference with Samantha Shannon — the hailed 21-year-old author of this season’s most hotly anticipated fantasy novel, The Bone Season — is she never stopped building those worlds. At 13, Shannon took pen to paper for the first time, embarked on her first novel at 15, and was deep into the development of The Bone Season throughout her college years at Oxford University. As we talked to her, however, she seemed fairly undaunted for someone supporting her first novel and, let’s face it, so young. We had a quick chat with the author (whose book debuts Tuesday!)

HERRIOTT GRACE is a venture of father and daughter, and this is their story. Lance and Nikole Herriott live 3400 kilometers apart: his workshop is in Victoria, British Columbia, and her studio is in Toronto, Ontario. When she first made her home more than halfway across the country, they started to send packages back and forth. In some of those packages, Lance began to include his own hand carved spoons. He had been collecting wood since the early seventies, and used his best pieces for these gifts.
Nikole loved them; their balance and shape, the pieces were made with unmistakable care. She knew they were something special. One day it dawned on her that others might appreciate her father’s talent as she did, so Nikole asked if he would ever want to share his work. She told him, “Leave it to me, I know just the sort.” And with that, Herriott Grace was born. They also make, by hand, kitchen linens, cake flags, birthday candles, beeswax salve and cookie cutters.

I’ve always been one of those people who, even during the darkest times or the grimmest circumstances, is able to see the silver lining….even if I have to imagine HARD that it’s there. That’s how I felt right before I met my husband. Like so many people, I had suffered some not-so-great relationships, one in particular that took a long time to recover from. Amazingly Kyle has only been into photographer for 9 months, but when you see his photos you will definitely think that is not the case. Check out this great interview where Kyle talks about where he finds inspiration, motivation, and how he feels about his decision to drop out of school to pursue traveling and photography.
Amazingly, you have only been interested in photography for the past year. What was it that sparked your interest in photography? I saw some photographs by Francesca Woodman online, and thought they were really interesting. It was the first time I had been so moved by photography. I showed them to a friend, and we started taking his parents camera to take photos of each other in abandoned houses that we found.
You’ve always been interested in art. Also, do you find inspiration for your photos from previous drawings and/or paintings that you have done? I try to plan things as much as possible. Studios that will showcase the work of members straight from the Flickr community. This week we peek into the life of a young man who found a career in photography, and only months after he got started. Kyle Thompson, 20, barely knew how to use a camera just over a year ago when he first started taking photos. But he has come a long way since embarking on his 365 project, in which he pledged to upload a new photo to Flickr every day for a year. He has less than 50 days left to go with his 365 and has already begun working as a freelance photographer. “I decided to do a 365 project because I saw so many people who had done them and improved so much,” says Kyle who lives just outside of Chicago, IL and describes his work at surrealist photography.
For all intents and purposes, he’s achieved that goal. “Before I started doing photography full-time, I was delivering pizzas,” Kyle says. “The concept was pretty simple. Ambera Wellmann.
