Many people felt that the word dumpling implied something small and I'll admit I was surprised when they set a plates of these in front of me. Of course looking back at the menu later I realized that they were actually, "pot stickers," shrimp and leek pot stickers to be exact. Of course those much smaller dumplings you can see in the back of the picture are the pork pot stickers so you can understand how there could be some confusion.

Dumplings can be steamed, boiled or fried. Pot stickers are known as such specifically because of their cooking method. They are seared and then steamed in the saute pan so that they cook through. The steam evaporates and the bottoms are crisped again at the very end of the cooking. In this case the size proved to be somewhat detrimental to the experience. Herbivoracious - Vegetarian Recipe Blog With A Fine Dining Twist. Mango slaw with cashews and mint. The inspiration for this slaw is a mango salad I order way too often from a local Thai place in hopes to offset the inevitable damage from the pad Thai I order with it. It has strips of mango, slivers of red pepper, red onion and mint, large toasted cashews and a spicy dressing with a lot of lime in it.

It’s always a surprise; sometimes the mango is underripe and sour (which I understand to be more traditional) and sometimes it’s sweet and almost overripe. The best part is that the salad tastes good no matter how the mango arrived that day. Of course, being me, I had to slaw it. Especially when it 100 degrees outside.

About your mango: This salad will work with almost any variety or ripeness of mango, whether sour or sweet. Basil Watermelon Caipirinha Recipe. When I wasn’t in the classroom during my college years, I was solving bigger problems; like how to smuggle alcohol into the dorms. It was in this place of higher learning that I discovered that watermelon soaks up vodka like a dry sponge.

Back then, drinking was much more a means to an end, so proof was often important that palate, and yet somehow, vodka soaked watermelon managed to bring on the tipsy without sacrificing taste. Fast forward a dozen years, and booze soaked watermelon is still one of my favorite endings to a summer picnic. It pacifies my sweet-tooth without weighing me down with a ton of butter and sugar.

This Basil Watermelon Caipirina also has the added benefit of looking like a salad, for those of us that live in places with draconian open container laws. While it isn’t a traditional Brazilian Caipirnha, all the flavours are there, and I love how the vegetal notes in the Cachaça compliment the green basil and cucumber-like flavor of the watermelon.

The past two months have been a rollercoaster of emotions; a whirlwind that’s swept me off my feet and dragged me into an unknown world. It feels as if I have been spat out by a great big tidal wave onto a desert island and I don’t know how to survive, so every day is a huge learning curve!

I’m touching my way through this project and can’t help but feel slightly lonesome, as Mr. P is still committed to his high-flying day job and I am left to make all the decisions…. This vast decision-making process is definitely taking me out of my comfort zone – I have a reputation for being indecisive! This project has pushed me right to the limits, although it’s a positive thing because it is supplying me with a few more tools in my hefty toolbox of life, laying down the foundations of strength that both of us will require in dealing with the day to day running of the British Larder, Suffolk. Well, the blessing came when the cavalry arrived – and they arrived alright!!
