Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been writing a series of posts on elements that digital photographers need to learn about in order to get out of Auto mode and learn how to manually set the exposure of their shots.

Introduction to Aperture in Digital Photography

I’ve largely focussed upon three elements of the ‘exposure triangle‘ – ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture. I’ve previously written about the first two and today would like to turn our attention to Aperture. Before I start with the explanations let me say this. If you can master aperture you put into your grasp real creative control over your camera. In my opinion – aperture is where a lot of the magic happens in photography and as we’ll see below, changes in it can mean the difference between one dimensional and multi dimensional shots. All About Aperture: What It Is & How To Use It. Photography is as much science as it is art, and there are three major variables you must have to have a working knowledge of the technical side of making a proper exposure: shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

A Post By: Darren Rowse Previously I’ve introduced the concept of the Exposure Triangle as a way of thinking about getting out of Auto Mode and exploring the idea of manually adjusting the exposure of your shots.

Introduction to Shutter Speed in Digital Photography

The three main areas that you can adjust are ISO, Aperture and Shutter speed. I’ve previously looked at making adjustments to ISO and now want to turn our attention to shutter speed. What is Shutter Speed? As I’ve written elsewhere, defined most basically – shutter speed is ‘the amount of time that the shutter is open’. In film photography it was the length of time that the film was exposed to the scene you’re photographing and similarly in digital photography shutter speed is the length of time that your image sensor ‘sees’ the scene you’re attempting to capture.

OpenReflex: A Fully Operational DIY 3D Printable SLR. The magic of 3D printing has led to the creation of a few pretty cool DIY projects we’ve featured in the past.

OpenReflex: A Fully Operational DIY 3D Printable SLR

In the world of cameras, we’ve seen everything from lens adapters to flash diffusers make their way into the real world via the 3D printer and some plastic. What we had never seen before now, however, was a fully operational 3D printed SLR camera, but freshly graduated design student Léo Marius has created just that! He’s calling it the “OpenReflex,” and it’s an open source analog SLR with a mirror viewfinder and mechanical shutter that you can build entirely on your own. All of the pieces can be printed on any recent RepRap-like ABS 3D-printer, after which assembly is fairly straightforward.

The camera comes in three distinct parts: the film receiver, the shutter and the viewfinder. Once you have everything you need, each of the parts is printed to create the three disassembled final pieces. (via Instructables via DIYP) Image credits: Photographs by Léo Marius. How to Become a Nat Geo Photographer. Reader Question: How do I become a photographer for National Geographic? My Answer: Photography is really no different than any other pursuit in life if you plan to make a living at it. Unfortunately, there are very few full time salaried photography jobs.

All the photographers who take pictures for National Geographic Traveler are freelance independent business owners. Taking pictures is an enjoyable activity, but if you decide that you want that to be your job you may find it’s not much fun anymore. Lensless Camera Takes Multiple-View Pictures. Earlier this month, we looked at a new kind of camera built at Bell Labs that creates pictures using no lenses and only a single pixel.

This lensless design is simple and easy to construct and suffers none of the aberrations usually associated with lenses—indeed none of the scene is out of focus. So it’s easy to imagine that lensless cameras are threatening to change the way we think about imaging. Today Hong Jiang and pals from Bell Labs show off another capability of their new design. The original camera makes an ordinary image with a single pixel. Jiang and co show how, with two pixels, it’s possible to create two different images of the scene. The arXiv Blog’s original post explained how the device works using on a technique known as compressive sensing: Posing People for Great Portrait Photography. Knowing how to pose people in a way that looks natural is half the battle when you are trying to get awesome portraits.

You are probably not surprised to hear that many people lock up when a camera is pointed at them. All of a sudden they get stiff and aren’t quite sure where to look, or where to put their hands. Your job as a portrait photographer is to gently guide them into looking natural. There is no magic pose or formula that will instantly turn your average photo subjects into Kate Upton, but the posing tips ahead will help you make people look their best in front of the camera. First things first: inspire confidence from behind the camera. Postmarked » Blog Archive » Night Photography Chart. Using Accessories and Props in Your Studio Portraits. Something that is often overlooked, and you might not think to include, is placing props in a photo.

Take this photo above; if I just took a photo of the woman standing there it would have been just another photo. But taking that sheer red curtain and having her hold it as a fan blew added a new dimension and gave the photo a voice: the photo now has emotion. Consider scouring through your house and consider picking up a bunch of props. If you take portrait photos for clients in your studio, having silly stuff for them to dress up and play with can be a great way to loosen everyone up and inject a little fun into the situation.

Which is Better? RAW vs. JPEG Images in Photography. One question I encounter quite frequently is, I usually tell folks that the instruction manual will do a better job since every model and brand are different, but I can help explain more general questions, such as, the difference between ISO, shutter speed and aperture. Another thing I can help explain is the different file formats a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera offers. Most cameras will let you shoot in JPG or RAW. Exposure Solutions: Sharp Action.
