Microscratches / Swirl marks / Spiderwebbing | VISCORBEL – Support for 3D Artists. Circular ‘spiderweb’ around bright highlights in the reflections, caused by microscratches catching light at different angles. We see this effect quite often on real world surfaces that have been scuffed, scratched and worn out for a while. Over the years, I’ve tried to achieve this effect in VRay for quite a few times… unsuccessfully After finding some leads on how to approach this on VRay forums, finally I think I’ve got a method that gives good looking results, naturally I also made a tutorial :) First of all, forget about using a regular Bump map, it simply doesn’t look right in my experience. You need to use a Normal map to simulate those extremely tiny scratches. This sort of map is best hand drawn in Photoshop, since you can easily make it tileable. Draw a bunch of scratches in the center of the image, making sure none of them approach the borders.

Here’s a quick video on how I do it and my resulting map. Now using the NVidia Normal Map filter, generate a Normal map. Ta-da! 60 Car Modeling Tutorials. Maya’s Viewport 2.0 has the ability to show you depth of field effects in real time. In this edition of Maya Mondays, Daryl takes a look at Maya’s Depth of Field featuresAutodesk.com This can be useful for viewing and gauging what the DOF settings may look like in the final render. Its not an exact true to render DOF, but it can be used to set up your focal plane and focus distance to block out what will be in focus in the shot without rendering. attributes of the depth of field settings for the standard Maya camera, and how those settings will reflect in in the viewport using Viewport 2.0 DOF in Viewport 2.0 Daryl covers the attributes of the depth of field settings for the standard Maya camera, and how those settings will reflect in the viewport using Viewport 2.0.

There is a saying:The more you know, the more you realize how little you know. Meaning, there are still plenty to learn and explore. However time is usually the issue. This has never been so true, especially in Computer Graphics field.

So much to learn, so little time. TRANSFER ATTRIBUTE VERTEX POSITION Anyway, look at this Transfer Attributes command in Maya, for example. One would think this is for transferring UV or Color, but in fact it is also useful to Project One Mesh over another Mesh, when Vertex Position is enabled. In this case, I select the big sphere (surface to project into) and then the "Maya" text, finally apply "Transfer Attributes". The effect is LIVE too, and quite stable.

This is probably similar to SOuP Ray Project node: Equivalent to that in Blender will be using Shrinkwrap Modifier: What neat in Blender is that the text object is LIVE and editable. It is just a very different implementation. So, anyway, I just felt like posting this. Maya waterfall tutorial using fluids and nparticles. A rough guide on how to create a waterfall in Autodesk Maya using nParticles and Fuids, as well as an example downloadable file demonstrating the final result of the process.

This is some pretty cool stuff right here. “In this case the particles simply fall under gravity and collide and bounce with objects. They emit into a fluid which has high density dissipation. The self shadowing of the fluid is important for the look of the render, and this scene also uses ambient diffusion to help provide detail in the shadowed regions. For efficiency auto resize was also enabled for the fluid. Exporting animation/rigs from Maya to Houdini. DEM. Bundle Configuration This is the final configuration of the levels of the grass. These are the settings of one bundle of five different levels, but for best results you will need to create more than 5 different bundles.

We will be using the Grass Carpet paint FX for the creation of the bundles, first of all we have to analyze the geometry that we need, the square form of the geometry would work, but it doesn’t have the best results, because when we assemble the parts will create an intersection and it will have a pattern that is going to be visible, and we want an uniform patch of grass. Wrong Form Correct Form If you want to make the circle you should make the configuration of all the 5 levels of the bundles, and after that convert each level of faces and remove the remaining faces outside the circle. Displacement Workflow. Intro This tutorial attempts to cover and clarify the process of generating and applying accurate displacement maps from either ZBrush or Mudbox, to V-Ray for Maya, V-Ray for 3ds Max, V-Ray for Cinema 4D, or Arnold for Maya (MtoA).

There's often a lot of confusion and misinformation surrounding displacement maps and how they're supposed to work. You'll sometimes see artists load a displacement map onto their low resolution geometry and play with intensity and depth values until it looks somewhat similar to their high resolution geometry and assume that's it's as close as they can get. But with a correct workflow you don't have to fiddle with settings or settle for 'close enough' - it'll just work correctly from the start to match your high resolution geometry as accurately as possible.

We'll first cover some of the underlying concepts behind how a floating-point displacement map works and how to recognize if you're getting correct results. How Floating-Point Displacement Works Figure 01.
