A ‘low-cost’ LMS starts at an average of $58K. That’s the low price. Which is still a whole LOT of money. And “in times like these…” Why pay for a pricey LMS when you can Moodle or Drupal or Sakai? Why do companies continue to pay huge dollars for products that are now being offered for free? (I’m a recent convert, perhaps on the path to open source evangelism.) So what are some of the hurdles to overcome in the corporate market? It’s free. Support. It’s not for corporate use. Out of the box, Moodle may not have all the features an enterprise needs, but simple add-ons can be created. It looks so very bland.

On the other hand, experienced developers rely less on those resources because they have more experience and a deeper understanding of what it takes to create an elearning course. This is worth touting. Michelle Martin, and Harold Jarche of Work Literacy, assisted by Tony Karrer, in conjunction with the eLearning Guild, are hosting a free Web 2.0 workshop. Spread over six weeks leading up to DevLearn, there’s a topic a week, and tasks to accomplish depending on your bandwidth, and a community, etc. The more I explore web 2.0 applications for organizational learning (and innovation, execution, etc), the more opportunities I see.
