Lecture 2 | String Theory and M-Theory. Lecture 1 | String Theory and M-Theory. How Quantum Suicide Works&. A man sits down before a gun, which is pointed at his head. This is no ordinary gun; it's rigged to a machine that measures the spin of a quantum particle. Each time the trigger is pulled, the spin of the quantum particle -- or quark -- is measured. Depending on the measurement, the gun will either fire, or it won't. If the quantum particle is measured as spinning in a clockwise motion, the gun will fire. Nervously, the man takes a breath and pulls the trigger. Go back in time to the beginning of the experiment. But, wait. This thought experiment is called quantum suicide. Lecture Notes. Neil DeGrasse Tyson: Death by Black Hole. Bio Neil deGrasse Tyson Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science.
Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. Tyson's professional research interests are broad, but include star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our Milky Way. Ryan Wyatt Ryan Wyatt assumed his role as Director of Morrison Planetarium and Science Visualization at the California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco) in April 2007.
Wyatt’s professional interests include making research data sets accessible to the general public, and developing standards and “best practices” in the fulldome video community.
