If my family lived in the hallway all of the time, we would be quite comfortable. But we all live in the various rooms of the house. We live in the Central Valley of California. We have completely cloudless days for 9 months out of the year. So those rooms of the house being hit by direct sunlight are warmer than other rooms; and that changes throughout the day. What is needed are: Like most people, I only have 1 zone in my home. The motion sensors (#2) will also allow the NEST thermostat to learn our patterns throughout the day of which rooms are occupied at what times of the day. Likewise, one (or more) of these wireless sensors could plug into a standard outdoor 120VAC outlet, thus providing the outside temperature to the Nest also. I had the exact same problem. Here is what you can do. Turn the FIOS WiFi off and change its subnet to something else, 192.168.2.1 for example. Plug your DD-WRT router's WAN port into one of the Ethernet ports on the FIOS router (DD-WRT will be in routing mode, not AP mode, might want to factory reset to be sure). Assign DD-WRT's WAN port a static IP address, like 192.168.2.2, gateway should be 192.168.2.1 and DNS whatever you want (probably 192.168.2.1).
Set the DD-WRT's LAN ip address up as 192.168.1.1 and all the other settings you prefer. Super price on Infratech 14-1000 at ToolTopia.com.
