That tidy little piece of technology is having its own quiet heyday, while digital devices mutate madly. The vitality of the book - as a form - is on spectacular display in the first-ever international competition of about 100 or so handmade books, which are daring, collectible pieces of contemporary art. Think of it as "American Idol" for a global village of bookbinders. Rather than interpreting songs, these competitors take years to create one-of-a-kind bindings for the letterpress-printed pages of the same book. In this instance, that book is a collection of poetry called "Water," which has inspired a dizzying array of book art. The traveling exhibition "Bound for Success" - organized by Designer Bookbinders, a 700-member British craft society devoted to the union of traditional technique and contemporary design - can be seen at the San Francisco gallery of Bonhams & Butterfields through March 6.
