From Journalism to UX (and maybe back again) – Medium

I know of many conflicted journalists who have dipped toes into other fields, either out of necessity (being laid off or needing an additional source of income as a freelancer), or because they’re simply tired and fed up. For a few years, I’ve been one of these — while freelancing for public radio, I made money from online content or marketing work, which I enjoyed at times, but which ultimately was not my passion. One scenario you don’t often see: journalists voluntarily getting into some other field because they’re interested in it. When it comes to intellectually stimulating, ego-boosting, fulfilling work, journalism is tough to beat. If you’re at all introspective as a journalist, you know this. There are so many overlaps between journalism and User Experience design, a relatively new field that I describe to friends and family as “the blueprints of the Internet.” A little postscript: I’ll always report. The User Experience Daily

We’re getting better at catering for different personas or demographics but the industry still lags a long way behind design that is accessible to as many disabled people as possible. The principle of “Design for All” is one that begins with the Seven Principles of Universal Design. These were founded at North Carolina State University back in 1997 by a team of design specialists across multiple disciplines which was headed by Ronald Mace. The Seven Principles help designers evaluate the effectiveness of their designs to be used by as many people as possible. Usability: A part of the User Experience. This subject may seem incredibly “big” for a single article, but it’s about the specific nature of usability that we often overlook or confuse.

Usability: A part of the User Experience

With this appreciation, you’ll be able to design more effectively, and your website’s usership will be able to grow, too. Usability replaced the outmoded label “user friendly” in the early 1990s. Metodología de Evaluación de Conformidad con la Accesibilidad en sitios Web (WCAG-EM) How to test the usability of prototypes like a pro. Usability isn’t something you just can cook up in any one phase of design, but must be developed and refined throughout the entire process.

If you want the best end product, you have to anticipate real user scenarios from the prototyping phase. Usability testing should be the last place to start thinking about usability. Why worry about usability testing so early in the process when prototyping already has a big enough to-do list? Because unless your prototype is usable, all your testing will tell you is that people don’t like terrible products. unless your prototype is usable, all your testing will tell you is that people don’t like terrible products It almost goes without saying, but you’re designing the product to be used by real people. With that in mind, let’s look at how to keep usability in mind as you build the prototype, how to test usability before you have a prototype, and tips for testing with prototypes… Usability tests before the prototype The right users and the right tasks.

It views interactivity as a variable of responsiveness in interpersonal and societal communication. The Internet has the potential to increase interactive attempts in journalism. However, media organizations do not necessarily exploit this opportunity effectively. An exploratory content analysis of 100 U.S. online newspapers reveals that many provide only token interactive options. The A-Z of UX design principles from the big tech firms / experts. They are called "heuristics" because they are broad rules of thumb and not specific usability guidelines. Visibility of system status The system should always keep users informed about what is going on, through appropriate feedback within reasonable time. Match between system and the real world The system should speak the users' language, with words, phrases and concepts familiar to the user, rather than system-oriented terms. User control and freedom Users often choose system functions by mistake and will need a clearly marked "emergency exit" to leave the unwanted state without having to go through an extended dialogue. Consistency and standards Users should not have to wonder whether different words, situations, or actions mean the same thing. Error prevention Even better than good error messages is a careful design which prevents a problem from occurring in the first place. How to keep up to date on UX Design.

Guía de Evaluación Heurística de Sitios Web. Plantilla para hacer análisis heurísticos de usabilidad. Content Analysis Heuristics. Most website designers are aware that an important part of understanding the background of any website redesign project is performing a content inventory as well as a content analysis. After all, authorities Lou Rosenfeld and Peter Morville include this famous Venn diagram in their classic Information Architecture for the World Wide Web: Clearly, we are supposed to understand the current website content before we begin the process of redefining and reorganizing the website.

So we all dutifully go through the website and prepare a content inventory spreadsheet capturing page titles, details of page content, and so on. Each content inventory contains a different set of columns and fields; each has a purpose specific to the needs of the particular site being analyzed.
