Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) Classroom Strategies Background The Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) is a strategy that guides students in asking questions about a text, making predictions, and then reading to confirm or refute their predictions. The DRTA process encourages students to be active and thoughtful readers, enhancing their comprehension. Benefits A DRTA may be used with an individual, a small group, or a whole class. Create and use the strategy Determine the text to be used and pre-select points for students to pause during the reading process. D - DIRECT - Teachers direct and stimulate students' thinking prior to reading a passage by scanning the title, chapter headings, illustrations, and other explanatory materials. R - READING - Teachers should have students read up to the first pre-selected stopping point in the text.

T - THINKING - At the end of the reading, teachers should have students go back through the text and think about their predictions. What do you think about your predictions now? The Reading & Writing Project - Reading and Writing Performance Assessments. If you are experiencing difficulties viewing the PDF documents below we recommend that you download Foxit PDF Reader. Common-Core-Aligned Performance Assessments These performance assessments were created by the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project for NYC Department of Education and some are owned by NYC Department of Education. The NYC Department of Education has agreed to allow Teachers College Reading and Writing Project to post the performance assessments online to support your students' academic progress.

You must obtain permission from the NYC Department of Education for any other use of the assessments. Performance Assessments engage students in authentic, high-level work that is aligned to curricular standards so that teachers can more carefully plan for instruction that meets students where they are and moves them forward. In the case of the second grade assessment, children will study nonfiction reading and informational book writing as two separate but related units. Chalk Talk: A Kindergarten Blog: Sensory Details Poetry. This week we learned about poetry and sensory details. We used the book Owl Moon as a springboard for writing a sensory detail poem. Owl Moon is perfect for teaching about sensory details because Jan Yolen is very specific and detailed about what the young boy hears, feels, sees, and smells. She even brings up how his mouth tastes and feels. We took each sense and explored the different things from the book that related to that sense.

Then we wrote a poem. We made paper plate owls with scrapbook paper wings. Today we wrote a sensory details poem about winter. We went back over the poem and talked about how each word used our senses to give us a visual picture in our heads. April 2014. Hello Everyone!! This is my favorite time of the school year. We are finishing up our testing, the kids have become quite independent with everything, they have become readers and writers, they have become problem solvers, I could go on and on!

I want to share some of their darling work and a couple of free units. First off, after the big chick hatching extravaganza, I decided to have the kids write about what they would do if they had a baby chick. The next thing I want to share is the beginning of our poetry unit. The last thing for tonight is a new unit I just finished. These are just a few of the over 60 pages in the unit! If you are interested in the unit, don't wait, Well, that's all I've got for tonight!! Talk to you all soon! Joyfully!

First Grade Student Center Activities: Reading Foundational Skills (CCSS) CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.2 Demonstrate Understanding Of Spoken Words, Retelling Rope. Hello Everyone! I almost forgot to post one other thing. I have had a ton of questions and e-mails about my story retelling rope that I posted on last year. You can read about that here! :) I have been doing retelling ropes for a long time. Does anybody remember "Project Read? " The author of that amazing curriculum was my inspiration for this way of teaching kids about the parts of a story and extending that into retelling. "Retelling" is an important component of discriminating comprehension in our beginning readers. Making it hands on is important to me! Here are some pics of finished products, anchor chart and student retelling rope. For your free mini unit on retelling grab the rope and click here!

TC Reading and Writing Project’s Videos. Word Sort Activities. I read the words for our new sort to the class. They had to decide if it had a short o sound or an or sound and then write the word under the correct column. When we were finished sorting we folded the paper so there were eight rectangles. The students turned their paper over and chose eight of the words we used for the word sort and then we played blackout bingo.

The student had to chose a word and read it to the class. In small group I read the word sort to the students and they had a card that had an o on one side and or on the other side. This was a whole group word sort. I love these Words Their Way books for word sorts. This one is more challenging for the middle to end of first grade. I also LOVE this one: Anchor Charts. Here are some other Pinterest ideas that I have made into small anchor charts. I don't know about you, but my classroom is limited on space to display all the charts that I would like to. I made this alphabet because I'm tired of the one in my classroom that takes up so much space.

I hope this will be a better fit and give me room to display my sound cards as well. I got this idea from Pinterest a couple weeks ago. I give 1 student a copy each day instead of their regular morning work. I tell them our "Number of the Day. " Wanted I just finished reading Daily 5 and I'm gearing up to start it at the beginning of next school year. Good Fit Book. ReadWorks.org | The Solution to Reading Comprehension.
