Cretu says the pieces aren’t digitally altered and that due to the organic nature of the medium, each piece has to be constructed and photographed in less than four hours. You can see much more over on Tumblr, and just launched an Etsy shop where you can get prints of his work. The Next M.C. Escher? The Disorienting Polyhedral Panoramic Perspective Drawings of Rorik Smith. Before an email arrived in my inbox this week I was completely unaware that a polyhedral panoramic perspective drawing was a thing, but apparently is, though a quick google search comes up with nothing.

But I’ll take artist Rorik Smith at his word and just enjoy the incredible effects achieved in his disorienting illustrations that are drawn with graphite pencils on-site without aid from photographic reference material or digital manipulation. Smith seems to introduce polarized coordinates at random locations in each drawing and then bends the perspective of the surrounding areas to match.

If that makes any sense. Love these. See much more in his portfoio. Origami: The surprisingly simple secret to creating flexible, high-power lithium-ion batteries. Researchers at Arizona State University have fused the mystical arts of origami with modern materials science to create a high-performance, flexible lithium-ion battery.

These batteries can be twisted, bend, and scrunched up multiple times, while retaining the same energy capacity and power output. Perhaps most excitingly, though, the researchers tell me that “all standard electrode materials and packaging technologies are used,” meaning this tech is safe and could theoretically be commercialized in its current form. One of the biggest remaining problems when it comes to flexible electronics — flexible smartphones, e-paper, etc. — is the lack of a flexible battery. We have covered some flexible and stretchable batteries on ExtremeTech before, but these have mostly been low-performance, printed or polymer batteries that probably wouldn’t work in commercial applications.

Rochester-based artist Andy Gilmore turns math into art, creating hypnotizing and kaledscopic patterns that are heavily influenced by patterns he encounters in nature as well as music. The prolific artist has numerous commercial clients including Wired, Nike, and the New York Times, but has also released his own visual compositions through Ghostly International Editions since 2010. Gilmore just released a new body of work and sat down with Ghostly in the video above to talk about his process and influence.

(via Colossal Submissions , and thnx Steve!) Six Great New Art Books. Over the last few months numerous artists who have appeared on Colossal have created or been included in some pretty fantastic books that I thought I would bring your attention to. So in no particular order… Before I Die, the book New Orleans artist Candy Chang (previously here, here and here) has seen her famous ‘Before I Die’ project spread to 300 walls in over 50 countries and in 20 languages. Her new book by the same name shares a lot about how the project came about and most importantly includes photos of anonymous comments filled with hope, fear, humor, and heartbreak. Art Made From Books Published just a few weeks ago Art Made from Books includes work from no less than 27 artists (over a dozen have appeared here on Colossal) who make sculptures, collages, installations, and other artworks with the pages of books.

Geometry Makes Me Happy Geometry Makes Me Happy from Index Book, is a collection of artists currently working with geometric froms in a variety of mediums.
