Ketchikan

Ketchikan[1] is a scenic town of approximately 14,000 people, located along the Tongass Narrows, at the foot of Deer Mountain, on Revillagigedo Island in Southeast Alaska. Understand[edit] Over 800,000 visitors come through Ketchikan[2] each year by cruise ship. Most spend only a few hours in town, limiting their tourism and recreation choices. Visitors who arrive by air, via the Alaska Marine Highway System, or by private vessel and who have more time to spend can choose from a wider array of activities. Climate[edit] Located in the vast coastal rainforest of Southeast Alaska, Ketchikan is one of the rainiest cities in North America with just over 160 inches of average annual precipitation. Get in[edit] Like most towns in the SE Alaska, Ketchikan can be reached by sea or by air.

By sea[edit] Ketchikan is served by the ferries of the Alaska Marine Highway System [3]. By air[edit] Get around[edit] Alaska Flightseeing Tours & Air Taxi Services. Viewing Alaska bears in their native habitat is one of the quintessential wildlife viewing experiences in the world, and our Bear Viewing Camp is a one of a kind way to include it in your Alaska experience.

Viewing Bears with Great Alaska Adventures

In the early spring, female Alaska Brown Bears (Ursos Arctos) leave their dens with young in tow, to feed on the succulent grasses found around our camp. This allows us the opportunity to view and photograph these magnificent animals from the safety and comfort of a permanent camp. Our permanent camp also allows the bears to understand our movements, as we are in the same locations day in and day out. This is a far more sustainable approach for the bears, and a unique and special experience for our guests. Great Alaska Bear Camp is available as a stand - alone trip to add to your own independent travel or as the perfect add on to a cruise, it is also included in some of our most popular itineraries: Facilities lodge and finished by your attentive staff. Alaska Bear Viewing Tours

Bears are found in nearly every corner of Alaska. Adult black bears range in weight from 200 to 500 pounds while Alaska brown bears may grow as large as 1,500 pounds. Grizzlies and brown bears are part of the same Alaska bear family. The term brown bear is usually given to bears that reside in Alaska coastal areas, while grizzlies usually reside inland. Alaska brown bears tend to be larger than grizzlies due to a more abundant supply of protein to eat such as salmon.
