These team building activities are also designed to develop other skills such as team work, self-confidence and communication skills in the students. At the same time, the brown bag activity promotes language development in ELL’s, helps Special Education students express their ideas and helps other students develop their leadership while collaborating with other students. The brown bag concept is designed to be completed within a class period keeping student engagement at an all-time high. Teachers will come away with ideas for their own little bag-of-tricks to be used in the class room to support curriculum and stir student interest. Download the PowerPoint presentation.

The Problem Here is some personal prejudice: I don’t love online courses.

Dan Meyer

I love learning in community, even in online communities, but online courses rarely feel like community. To be clear, by online courses I mean the kind that have been around almost since the start of the internet, the kind that were amplified into the “Future of Education™” in the form of MOOCs, and which continue today in a structure that would be easily recognized by someone defrosted after three decades in cold storage.

These courses are divided into modules. Each module has a resource like a video or a conversation prompt. The reality is that your comment falls quickly down a long list as other people comment, a problem that grows in proportion to the number of students in the course. 89 lesson plans and ideas for teaching math - #mathchat. Today, I dedicate this post to my high school Algebra teacher, Noel Martin, who still teaches my own children just down the middle school hallway, the last room on the right.

Coach Martin is a fantastic Algebra teacher. I thanked God every day of calculus at Georgia Tech that I'd had Coach Martin to drill into me the fundamentals of Algebra. I still use Algebra all the time to solve problems. Math = Love. Math Kangaroo in USA - Practice. Math = Love: My Favorite Games. Archives. Mrs. D's Multiplication Rap Remix. Number Theory: Nice Generalization of the Waring Conjecture. The Waring conjecture - actually a problem associated with a number of conjectures, many now being solved - is one of the most fascinating mathematical problems.

Number Theory: Nice Generalization of the Waring Conjecture

This article covers new aspects of this problem, with a generalization and new conjectures, some with a tentative solution, and a new framework to tackle the problem. Yet it is written in simple English and accessible to the layman. I also review a number of famous related mathematical conjectures, including one with a $1 million award still waiting for a solution, as well as Goldbach's conjecture, yet unproved as of today.

Many curious properties of the Floor function are also listed, and the emphasis is on machine learning and efficient computer-intensive algorithms to try to find surprising results, which then need to be formally proved or disproved. 1. The Waring problem deals with the representation of positive integers by sums of k-th powers of positive integers. Let us introduce some useful notation. Spectacular Result 2. The IBL Blog: Iceberg Diagram: Fixed-Mindset, Math Anxiety

", it may be the tip of an iceberg. A sign that math anxiety and/or fixed mindsets about learning math lurks underneath the surface. Here's the Iceberg Diagram. The IBL Blog: Day 1 Activity: "What is one of your hobbies, and how did you get good at it?" Day 1 is here at Cal Poly (Quarter System).

The IBL Blog: Day 1 Activity: "What is one of your hobbies, and how did you get good at it?"

I know we are a month behind nearly everyone else, but day 1 is still day 1. This quarter I am working with Professor Choboter on Calculus 1, and we implemented one of the strategies to build student buy-in our classes. We asked students via email before the first day to think about one of their hobbies and how they became better at it. In class, we have students talk to a neighbor to introduce themselves and share with one another their hobby and what they did to get better at that hobby. We then asked each pair to talk to another pair and introduce their neighbors.

Next, students were asked to write on the board their hobby on the left side, and on the right side I asked them to write how they go better at the hobby. Discovering the Art of Mathematics (DAoM) Once upon a time… In a galaxy far far away… In a world… I can never seem to find an opening line that I really like when I write, so I will just jump in and I ask you to please pretend that I started with a very compelling and gripping opening.

My goal for this blog post is for you to get a sense of my philosophy and approach to one of the most enjoyable courses I teach; as well as to highlight how an IBL (inquiry-based learning) approach to the course is fundamental for the learning goals that I and my institution have for the course. Notice that you can download some of my explorations below.

I think it’s fair to say that I am a card-carrying member of the IBL club. I come up with “Puppy House” instead so my students can still create something that allows them lots of practice with writing linear equations with domain and range restrictions. They draft the house on paper. The house needs to have a minimum of 6 slanted lines, 5 vertical lines, 5 horizontal lines, and one image of a puppy at entrance of house.

Below are the ones from my Math 8 Honors kids who learned quadratic last year. They completed these within one 55-minute period. Online Fractal Course – Fractal Foundation. By visually introducing addition as stacking blocks and subtraction as holes in the ground, students see how addition and subtraction are the of each other. As the puzzles transition, students solve multi-step puzzles to determine the height JiJi will end up at. Play Game. Global Math Project. THE CONVERSATION math trauma.
