IMAGE: “Penguin Interviews,” from Frederick Cook’s Through the First Antarctic Night, 1896-1899 , via Peter Smith , Food & Think . Very good news: my former colleague at GOOD , Peter Smith , has joined the Smithsonian’s Food & Think blog as a regular contributor. Among his early posts is this one , on a highly effective scurvy prevention technique pioneered by Frederick Cook , an American surgeon and polar explorer. Cook’s achievements have been overshadowed by his controversial claims to have been the first man to reach the North Pole as well as the first to climb Mt.Beginning with their June issues, the editors of the 19 international editions of Vogue magazine have made a pact to stop using models under age 16 or those who, from the viewpoint of the editors, appear to have an eating disorder. In a somewhat unusual announcement, unusual in that the magazines are wading into a controversial issue, the Condé Nast International chairman, Jonathan Newhouse, said on Thursday, “Vogue editors around the world want the magazines to reflect their commitment to the health of the models who appear on the pages and the well-being of their readers.” For decades, fashion magazines have been criticized for upholding an unrealistic standard of beauty, and even more so with the widespread use of digital retouching that often results in images of models and celebrities that have no basis in reality.

My sister’s name is Nina. She was born sixteen months after me and we were tight from the beginning. When my parents brought her home from the hospital I couldn’t stop marveling at her thick chock of black hair , tiny smudge of a nose, and tightly closed eyes. We traveled together a lot from those early ages. Now, our family never went anywhere too exotic – leaving elephant safaris, ancient trail hikes , and exotic reef dives for other families – but we did cover our fair share of the Northwestern, uh, quadrisphere of the Earth . Yes, we owned that quadrisphere.
1000 Awesome Things
“Strangely heartwarming… perfect for rainy days.” – The New Yorker “Little things, it turns out, are extremely important to happiness, and THE BOOK OF AWESOME will remind you of a thousand little things that will make you happier.” - Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project “Pasricha emerges a committed but inviting optimist, combating life’s unending stream of bad news by identifying opportunities to share a universal high five with humanity.” – Publisher’s Weekly From neighbors with pools to ordering off the menu at fast-food restaurants to fixing electronics by smacking them , The Book of Awesome takes on life’s sweet feats with all the honest humor and winning enthusiasm that has earned Pasricha’s blog its millions of followers. But while powered along by Pasricha’s distinctive, fresh, and hilarious voice, The Book of Awesome isn’t about one man’s favorite things, but rather a catalog of the universal little pleasures we all share .
The Book of Awesom
Click here for a high-res book cover. “This may be the greatest piece of literature on awesome the world has ever seen. If Ernest Hemingway were alive today he’d say, ‘I’m one hundred and twelve years old. Someone please kill me.’ But I also think he’d like this book.” —Justin Halpern, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Sh*t My Dad Says
Book 2 | 1000 Awesome Things
Some thoughts and reviews from around the horn: “1000 Awesome Things might be described as optimism for the rest of us. Sunny without being saccharine, it’s a countdown of life’s little joys that reads like a snappy Jerry Seinfeld monologue by way of Maria Von Trapp.” – The Vancouver Sun “Neil Pasricha is the guru of small joys.” – The Toronto Star “None of what Pasricha shares is philosophical or heady. Similarly, his style is not a pontification on a single universal truth on how to live a more positive life, regardless of one’s personal circumstances.

He or she may suffer from addiction, burnout, extreme stress, codependence, compassion fatigue, or any number of conditions or mind states that are significantly distressing. Booooooom!
You may have seen me post this photo to my instagram a couple days ago and yes, it is our next giveaway! Elli Popp sent over these beautiful ceramics featuring drawings by Edwyn Collins (had to link it for the Empire Records fans). So who wants ‘em?The other night a few of us painted at an event called “Art After Dark” at the Honolulu Museum of Art. The best part was when this little girl fearlessly walked up on the stage and joined in on the action.
