LearningWorks for Kids

Working Memory is the thinking skill that focuses on memory-in-action: the ability to remember and use relevant information while in the middle of an activity. For example, a child is using their Working Memory as they recall the steps of a recipe while cooking a favorite meal. Children who have trouble with their Working Memory skills will often have difficulty remembering their teachers’ instructions, recalling the rules to a game, or completing other tasks that involve actively calling up important information. Video games can help improve Working Memory by allowing kids to practice their memory skills while in the midst of a fun and immersive gaming experience.

Many games require that the player learn and repeatedly recall information in order to succeed and advance to higher levels. Watch the video to learn more about how video games can help your child improve their Working Memory thinking skill. Working-Memory-and-Education - home. Memory Games at Play Kids Games. If you are working through the tutorial, you should have completed Part 2.1 before beginning this section. At this stage of the tutorial, you have set overarching goals, organized content, and developed a course plan with ideas for how to give students the practice that will make it possible for them to achieve the course goals. In this section of the tutorial, you will make choices about what you will have students do in order to learn the course content and practice the goals.

Before presenting a smorgasbord of teaching strategies, this section of the tutorial will explore briefly what is known about how people learn. Start by downloading the worksheet (Microsoft Word 22kB Jun16 05) that goes with this part, and use it as you work through the sections below. Student Learning Research shows clearly that a person must be engaged to learn.

Overview of learning styles

Learning styles group common ways that people learn. Everyone has a mix of learning styles. Some people may find that they have a dominant style of learning, with far less use of the other styles. Others may find that they use different styles in different circumstances. There is no right mix. Using multiple learning styles and multiple intelligences for learning is a relatively new approach.

ABCs of Teaching Reading. Reading 101 Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression.

ABCs of Teaching Reading

Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Watch an afterschool program called RAVE-O that helps teach reading fluency in Malden, Massachusetts. When fluent readers read silently, they recognize words automatically. They group words quickly to help them gain meaning from what they read. Because fluent readers do not have to concentrate on decoding the words, they can focus their attention on what the text means. Related articles. Homepage - ReadWriteThink. Response to Intervention.
