DESIGN 21: Competitions. The ZIP is an eco-friendly instant shelter that utilizes zippers to connect various triangular modules to develop multiple configurations of emergency shelters for habitation. Picture-1 From a simple process of zipping together modules into patterns and folding these units, ZIP can be assembled and disassembled in a short time. The basic pyramid shape is simple but strong and could be further developed to make different-sized shelter units to accommodate users’ needs (for sleeping quarters, first aid centers, kitchen, shower room or portable toilet). Picture-2 The base material is composed of three layers: waterproof polyethylene, cardboard and polyethylene adhesion.

Each module is composed of two thicknesses of this material with a zipper joining these double-thick modules. Picture-3 With 3/4-inch diameter holes at each corner of the modules, the design allows for multiple canopy-like shelters by stringing guy ropes through these holes. Our friends from OBRA Architects shared with us their project Red+Housing, an emergency housing prototype commissioned as part of CROSSING: Emergency Dialogues for Architecture to acknowledge the anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake, exhibition held at the National Art Museum of China. More images and architect’s description after the break. Architecture on the Edge of Survival involves the development of an original prototype of emergency housing for future potential deployment in areas of natural or man-made disaster anywhere in the world.

Emergency housing from the point of view of design is only an extreme form of architecture. Its context is that of almost unsustainable conditions, and its object, the creation of an environment we can inhabit temporarily while living on the edge. Red+Housing is proposed with the knowledge that, when living on the edge of survival, action needs to be decisive and precise. 01. 02. 03. 04. 05. 06. 07. 08. 09. 10. CMax System.

Disaster House DH1. 8 transitional shelters - Index - IFRC. The books contain reviews by structural engineers of post disaster designs that have been built in significant numbers.

It is intended that this information will support the early stages of shelter programmes and inform shelter decision making. These shelters should not be used without being adapted to the context. Inclusion of shelter designs does not mean that they have been endorsed by IFRC. The books contain post disaster shelters that are not intended as complete permanent housing units. The books are structured as follows: Section A discusses shelter design briefs, includes a programming checklist and explains how the shelters were reviewed. These books are not guidelines on shelter programming.

These two books are primarily aimed at shelter delegates within the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. These webpages are to share the outputs of the IFRC technical shelter working group relating to the design of shelters. There are now two editions of this book. References.
