I'm amazed that you all didn't mention Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. Synopsis: The Earth is invaded by the Overlords who bring about world peace and an end to violence, but they tend to remain in their ships rather than intermingle with humanity. Eventually they do show themselves and even though they look like human's concept of the Devil it eventually leads to a Golden Age for Earth. As time progresses the children of humanity begin to evolve in new directions and develop powers such as telekinesis and telepathy which is a precursor to evolving.
