Last Saturday I was lucky enough to witness the world premiere of Planetarium , the song cycle made by Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly and Bryce Dessner (of The National), in Eindhoven. They were joined by the New Trombone Collective and the Navarra String Quartet on stage, as if those three on one stage wasn't amazing enough just yet. Stevens comenzó su carrera musical en una banda folk llamada Marzuki, originaria de Holland, Michigan. A su vez, formaba (y forma parte) de Danielson Famile, tocando varios instrumentos. Mientras aun estudiaba en la universidad, escribió y grabó su primer álbum, A Sun Came, bajo Asthmatic Kitty Records, compañía discográfica fundada por su padrastro. Tras mudarse a Nueva York, compuso y grabó su segundo disco, Enjoy Your Rabbit, un LP más electrónico y con una temática centrada en el zodiaco chino. Su siguiente trabajo, Michigan (o «Greetings from Michigan the Great Lake State»), sería el primero de su ambicioso proyecto de 50 álbumes con temática de cada uno de los estados de los Estados Unidos. Dentro de Michigan se encuentran referencias a Detroit y Flint, la península superior de Michigan y sitios turísticos como las Cascadas de Tahquamenon.
Sufjan Stevens was born in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in the chilly upper reaches of the Lower Peninsula. A self-taught musician, the young Sufjan pounded out elaborate Mozartian sonatas on a toy Casio, and by college became proficient on the oboe, recorder, banjo, guitar, vibraphone, bass, drums, piano, and other instruments too numerous to mention. Somewhere along the line he also started to sing, though at the time his friends didn't encourage it. He bought a 4-track tape cassette recorder and painstakingly composed 90-minute concept albums for The Nine Planets, The 12 Apostles, and The Four Humors. He read William Blake, William Wordsworth, and William Faulkner. At that time, in college, the world loomed large and daunting, and Sufjan's music came to sound like a medieval woodwind ensemble waving swords and torches at the twelve-headed dragon of death.

Allí asistió a la Harbor Light Christian School (Escuela Cristiana Luz del Puerto ), así como a la prestigiosa Academia de Artes Intercholen. Posteriormente asistió al Hope College, en Holland (Míchigan , Su nombre de origen árabe surge de una preeminente figura islámica, Abu Sufyan. Desde pequeño se interesó por la música, y se considera un músico autodidacta.
