“Den franske sal” a hidden gem in Oslo. Did you know? A French gem is hidden in the National Gallery of Oslo. “Den franske sal” (The French Salon) is a very nice venue for afternoon tea, a quiet business lunch or a bite after visiting the museum. From a historical point of view, the sculptures of the room, which the originals dating from the 17th and 18th centuries are located in the Louvre Museum in Paris, were given by the French state in 1923. Iran's top 10 tourist destinations – in pictures. The forgotten land of colours: a trip through Iran's Persian Gulf.

“This rock is a dragon, left here before the last great war.” “Look at the top of the cliff. We call that rock Ferdowsi, as it looks from afar like the great poet.” Locals have stories for the rocks and cliffs that resemble birds, animals or mythical creatures. “We grew up with our grandparents taking us on long walks and telling us about the rocks,” says Ali Hormuzi, a 44-year-old resident. Colourful mountains in shades of pink, red, purple and yellow overlook shorelines where turtles and flamingos roam or sunbathe. This is Hormuz island in the Persian Gulf, the mostly forgotten land of colours in the Strait of Hormuz, 5km from the mainland, and southeast of Bandar Abbas, major port and capital of the province of Hormuzgan.

The island was once settled by tens of thousands but its population has fallen below 10,000. “Before, most men on the island were involved in trade with Khasab, a coastal city in Oman,” says Ali. Ali has worked hard to make ends meet since trading with Oman declined. Soho House Berlin | Membership. Norway's skiing secrets | Mariella Frostrup | Travel. The only sound as I slide along is the whoosh of metal blades on ice and the panting of the huskies. In every direction stretches a dazzling canvas of snow and pine with not a sign of habitation. We are intruders in this winterscape. Johan, the owner of the dog-sledding outfit, is our outrider, leading the way, surefooted as a deer as he careers ahead. Negotiating the bends between tree trunks at breakneck speed without the sleigh toppling brings shrieks of delight from the children.

I gave up trying to find our destination, Hemsedal, in the Lonely Planet guide. The pared-back nature of daily life in a country boasting the third-largest sovereign wealth fund is quite a surprise. Thankfully there's a newfound thaw in my countrymen's icy resolve. Among downhill aficionados the word "flat" often finds its way into descriptions of Norway's skiing potential, yet as I sat on our sunny terrace surrounded by precipitous pinnacles I put such comments down to malicious propaganda. Top 10 Night Clubs in Istanbul — Witt Magazine. Night life in Istanbul is huge. There are many popular establishments — some aged over thirty years old and some very down to date. Being such a big city with several city centers, Istanbul has more than one entertainment destination. On the Asian side Caddebostan “barlar sokağı” — a street of pubs on Iskele Street — and Kadife Street, both in the Kadıköy district, have a lot to offer.

On the European side, night clubs aren’t concentrated in one location. There are numerous venues spread out over Nişantaşı in the Şişli district, Ortaköy in the Beşiktaş district or Taksim, Istiklal Street and Nevizade in the Beyoğlu district. In this article I can only mention the tip of the iceberg with a list of 10 night clubs locals put on the top of their lists. La Mouette This restaurant is located on the terrace of Beyoğlu's Tomtom Suites hotel. It has a superb view of the old city, but, more importantly, it has the talents of two young chefs who are doing stellar work using locally-sourced ingredients. Their imaginative take on the Turkish staple Arnavut ciğeric (Albanian-style liver) is reminiscent of foie gras and is among the more sublime dishes found in town. One of their desserts, a panna cotta made with yoghurt, pulls off the nifty trick of not only cleverly imitating its original inspiration but actually bettering it.• Tomtom Kaptan Sokak 18, Beyoğlu, +90 212 292 4467, lamouetterestaurant.com, mains TL45 (£17).

Use a ‘Fake’ Location to Get Cheaper Plane Tickets. I can’t explain airline pricing but I do know some plane tickets can be cheaper depending on where you buy them or, even better, where you appear to buy them from. This is all about leveraging foreign currencies and points-of-sale to your advantage. For reasons I never quite understood, every time I tried to book a domestic flight in another country, the prices were always exorbitant. But, say, once I was in Bangkok, that same flight that was once $300 would fall to $30 almost inexplicably. This phenomenon is because a ticket’s point-of-sale—the place where a retail transaction is completed—can affect the price of any flight with an international component. Most people don’t know there is a simple trick for “changing” this to get a cheaper flight on an airline’s website; it’s how I managed to pay $371 for a flight from New York to Colombia instead of $500+. Unsurprisingly, Kayak takes a U.S.

Finding the most hipster neighborhood in the capital of checked shirts is a hard job, but we’ll give it to the art / food / music combo of the Pearl District.

Travel tips: Oslo’s trendy new suburb Grünerløkka, and the week’s best deals | Joanne O’Connor | Travel. Why go? It’s been said that when a man is tired of Oslo he’s probably been there for three days. While it’s true the Norwegian capital lacks some of the carefree charm of its Scandinavian neighbours, there are pockets of cool if you know where to look. In the east of the city, once-gritty Grünerløkka has undergone a transformation from rundown industrial district to a vibrant, arty neighbourhood which could give cool Copenhagen or style-savvy Stockholm a run for their money.

What to do Spend a day or two exploring the area’s vintage and designer shops and galleries, or rummaging through the stalls at the Birkelunden Sunday fleamarket.
