Various laws apply to the use of animals in schools particularly any "live non-human vertebrate, that is fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, encompassing domestic animals, purpose-bred animals, livestock, wildlife, and also cephalopods such as octopus and squid". In most Queensland schools teachers provide students with a limited range of research questions to investigate, usually drawn from a single unit (eg plants). This allows students to focus on the process and techniques of investigation and the subsequent reporting.
