According to wikipedia bento is a one portion takeout or home packed meal and a bento box is obviously the container – lunch box by a much prettier name. The bento box quilt block is often made by making a courthouse steps block and cutting it into quarters, but I find it easier to make each quarter block seperately. I have made each block 12″ square finished size and the quilt is 48″ by 60″. I have used 20″ cut across the width of each of ten fabrics – five dark and five light. This fall quilt is about 40″ square and I’ve made it with a tree block in the middle and maple leaf quilt blocks around the outside. I gathered all the autumnal fabrics frommy stash and thoroughly enjoyed myself making it! Cutting requirements I can’t say how much of each fabric because obviously it depends on how many fabrics you choose, but the tree block takes forty seven 2.1/2″ squares and thirty four 2.7/8″ squares. Making the tree Make half square triangles From several colours I cut strips 2.1/2″ wide and 2.7/8″ wide and cut these into squares. It’s a great idea – you begin with a basic nine patch quilt block, cut it into quarters and then sew it all back together again. Sounds like a lot of work but gives some really complicated patterns which were very easy to make.
