Bloomberg Philanthropies. Cities are uniquely able to innovate and transform citizens’ lives, but face many barriers to developing and implementing solutions to tough challenges.

Bloomberg Philanthropies

City governments are not always organized to support innovation, especially when it comes to addressing “horizontal” issues—such as poverty reduction, sustainability, or customer service—that are the shared responsibility of multiple departments and chains of command. The absence of standard management and engagement strategies to overcome department silos makes it harder for leaders to define, deliver, and sustain solutions to these complex and multifaceted challenges. Further, many mayors’ offices lack the human capital, organizational capacity, or financial resources to take on bold ideas. A tension exists between “putting out fires” and managing day-to-day responsibilities and finding the time and space needed to think, plan, and launch new solutions. Bloomberg Philanthropies. On The Genetic Trail Of The Bene Israel. Jerusalem — When tens of thousands of members of the Bene Israel Jewish community moved from western India to Israel in the years following the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948, some prominent IsraelI rabbis openly doubted the community members’ Jewishness.

On The Genetic Trail Of The Bene Israel

They exhibited so much doubt, in fact, that in the early 1960s the notoriously stringent Chief Rabbinate instructed its marriage registrars to investigate the lineage of all Bene Israel community members who applied for marriage licenses in order to determine near ancestors were indeed Jewish. It was not until 1964, after community members held rallies decrying the rabbinate’s practice and accusing government officials of racism, that the rabbinate declared that Bene Israel were “full Jews.” But the rabbinate’s recognition of the Bene Israel, one of three Jewish communities in India (alongside the Cochin and Baghdadi communities) didn’t end the curiosity about the community’s roots.

Net Metering

Net metering is a billing mechanism that credits solar energy system owners for the electricity they add to the grid. For example, if a residential customer has a PV system on the home's rooftop, it may generate more electricity than the home uses during daylight hours. If the home is net-metered, the electricity meter will run backwards to provide a credit against what electricity is consumed at night or other periods where the home's electricity use exceeds the system's output. Customers are only billed for their "net" energy use. On average, only 20-40% of a solar energy system’s output ever goes into the grid.

Find out what net metering is available from your utility and see what effect this has on the return you will get by installing a solar power system. Giving Customers Control Over Their Electricity Bills Net metering allows utility customers to generate their own electricity cleanly and efficiently. Creating Jobs & Encouraging Private Investment. Taiwan recently finished construction on an incredible solar-powered stadium that will generate 100% of its electricity from photovoltaic technology!

Guardian Environment Network: Taiwan's solar stadium 100% powered by the sun

Designed by Toyo Ito, the dragon-shaped 50,000 seat arena is clad in 8,844 solar panels that illuminate the track and field with 3,300 lux. The project will officially open later this year to welcome the 2009 World Games. Building a new stadium is always a massive undertaking that requires millions of dollars, substantial physical labor, and a vast amount of electricity to keep it operating. Toyo Ito's design negates this energy drain with a stunning 14,155 sq meter solar roof that is able to provide enough energy to power the stadium's 3,300 lights and two jumbo vision screens.

To illustrate the incredible power of this system, officials ran a test this January and found that it took just six minutes to power up the stadium's entire lighting system!
