The group has set up a sophisticated daylighting laboratory with, among other, a scanning sky simulator and an automated heliodon, which allow reproducing with very high precision all daylight conditions that exist around the world.
Recently, research related to visual and non-visual aspects of light on human physiology and behavior has been carried out under the supervision of research associate Dr Mirjam Münch, who set up a photobiological laboratory with different light sources for this purpose. During their construction, occupancy, renovation, repurposing, and demolition, buildings use energy, water, and raw materials, generate waste, and emit potentially harmful atmospheric emissions. These facts have prompted the creation of green building standards, certifications, and rating systems aimed at mitigating the impact of buildings on the natural environment through sustainable design.
The push toward sustainable design increased in the 1990s with the creation of Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), the first green building rating system in the U.K. Green product standards also began to appear in the marketplace in the 1980s and increased in the 1990s. Elle regroupe les plus grands certificateurs (LEED), (BREEAM), (DGNB), etc... et est soutenue par l'Unesco Chair for sustainable buildings et par l'initiative bâtiment et construction durable du Programme des Nations unies pour l'environnement (PNUE).
