Taxes and the Tyranny of the Minority - Room for Debate

When President George W. Bush and Congress slashed federal income taxes a decade ago, most Americans were enthusiastic — and one of the key factors in accounting for their enthusiasm was a widespread sense that their own taxes were too high. Most didn’t know, or were willing to overlook, that the bulk of the savings would go to a narrow sliver of wealthy taxpayers. No government can survive indefinitely while catering to the fantasy that taxes are evil or unnecessary. Even people who felt that growing economic inequality was regrettable and that the rich were asked to pay less than they should in taxes were largely supportive of a policy whose main effects were to lower the tax bill and further increase the disposable income of the rich — and to run up an enormous federal debt.
