Vision Statement: Why Mumbai at 1 PM Is the Center of the Business World. Map out how 12 major cities’ workdays overlap and you’ll see that the American workday is a terrible time to try to get the rest of the world on the phone. The time zone champion is India. Lunchtime in Mumbai spans part of the workdays of most of Europe, Johannesburg, Moscow, the Gulf States, India, and East Asia. In fact, Mumbai’s workday overlaps with the workdays of countries that account for 73% of the world’s GDP, compared with only 33% for New York’s day.

Now you know the time to hold a call, but on what day should you hold it? Taking holidays out of the mix eliminates 25% of 2011’s workdays for these 12 cities. In fact, only 15 workweeks (29%) are uninterrupted by a holiday—that’s before accounting for vacations. Monday is the worst day for a call, with holidays on 40% of them.
