Ig-3. Ig-2. The Growth of UK Online Spending. One in 10 retail sales took place online in April: ONS. One in 10 retail sales took place online in April as cold weather kept shoppers out of the shops, according to official figures. The April 2013 Retail Sales bulletin from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that 10% of sales during the month happened online. The relatively high proportion of sales that took place online appeared to bear out suggestions by larger retailers, said the ONS, that “during the continued cold weather consumers purchased from their online sites rather than in store.” Online spending grew during the month to £571.7m a week, up by 13.2% compared with the same month last year.

That contrasted with total retail spending, which rose by 1.3% compared with last April, while sales volumes increased by 0.5% on the previous year. Compared with March 2013, total retail spending and the volume of goods bought both fell by 1.3%. The movement downwards came primarily from the food sector. ONS figures are estimated based on figures from 5,000 retailers of all sizes. Online sales growth subdued as high street sales surge ahead. Online sales showed only subdued growth in March, outperforming high street sales by the smallest margin recorded to date in the British Retail Consortium’s (BRC) monthly retail sales monitor. Ecommerce grew by 6.6% during the month, the BRC-KPMG monitor found, while retail sales as a whole grew by 3.7% in total, or 1.9% on a like-for-like basis. Last March, retail sales as a whole grew by 3.6% and online sales by 13.9%.

The “good overall” performance of the retail sector wasn’t reflected online, said Helen Dickinson, director general of the BRC [IRDX VBRC]. “Fundamentally, online retailing is still strong but in March it outperformed overall retailing by the smallest margin we’ve recorded,” she said. “The fact that many of us are about and about or spending time with family can have an impact on online sales over Easter, but there may be another factor in play. However, she predicted, this would almost certainly be a “short lived interlude. British Retail Consortium. The UK's online obsession: the latest Ofcom figures for media consumption | News. With a love for online shopping, social networking and catch up TV, the UK is becoming one of the worlds most web and gadget obsessed countries according to the latest survey results from Ofcom's annual communications market report.

Smartphones have continued to be a popular choice (last year 60% of teens admitted to being 'highly' addicted to their smartphones) and now 60% of mobile phone owners in the UK own one of the devices. Accessing social networking sites is a key use of smartphones according to the results. The guardian's media business correspondent Mark Sweney writes today: A seeming obsession with Facebook, Twitter, watching Gangnam style clips on YouTube and using online music services has seen UK consumers download a record 424 megabytes of data each per month on their smartphones and tablets. 62% of British 18-24 year olds access their Facebook profiles from smartphones and tablets - much higher than the other countries analysed in the report.
