Speed and Velocity

Facebook Twitter

Distance, rate and time. A rate is a ratio that compares two different kinds of numbers, such as miles per hour or dollars per pound. A unit rate compares a quantity to its unit of measure. A unit price is a rate comparing the price of an item to its unit of measure. The rate "miles per hour" gives distance traveled per unit of time. Problems using this type of rate can be solved using a proportion, or a formula. On a vacation, Linda's family traveled 495 miles at 55 mph. How long did the trip take? Q & A: What is speed? | Department of Physics | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Great question! Speed is how fast something is going. Another way to think of this is as how far you can go in a certain amount of time. For example, if you’re walking slowly, your speed is probably about 2 miles per hour. This means that in one hour, you’ll be able to move 2 miles. If you’re running quickly, your speed is probably closer to 7 or 8 miles per hour. If you’ve ever looked at the speedometer of a car, you’ve seen that it measures speed in mph (or kph). The word "velocity" means almost the same thing as speed, except that velocity also means which way you’re going. -Tamara.
