iGNANT

The series reads like a homage to the forgotten solo row house. The Baltimore based self-taught photographers interest ‘in these solitary buildings is not only in their ghostly beauty but in their odd placement in the urban landscape. Often three stories high, they were clearly not designed to stand alone like this’. He calls the solo row house an architectural quirk of certain cities on the eastern seaboard of the United States. iGNANT. The urban space is striking.

Its tall and mysterious buildings, crowds of anonymous people, an endless sea of concrete are constantly intriguing Clarissa Bonet. ‘City Space’ is a ongoing photographic exploration of the urban environment and her perception of it. She is interested in the physical space of the city and its emotional and psychological impact on the body. ‘These photographs reconstruct mundane events in the city that I have personally experienced or witnessed in public. Stark light, deep shadow and muted color are visual strategies I explore to describe the city’.

Iwan Baan

But in case you haven’t, Iwan Baan is a dutch photographer that has been documenting works from the best contemporary architects, such as OMA, SANAA, Steven Holl, Sou Fujimoto, Toyo Ito, Zaha Hadid, Michael Maltzan and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, moving away from the traditional static architecture photography. He’s always moving between London, Amsterdam, Paris, New York or Beijing, where he has been documenting the construction of OMA’s China Central Television (CCTV) building, alongside Herzog & de Meuron’s Olympic Stadium and other 2008 Olympic projects in Beijing. Jonas Bendiksen. A Jonas Bendiksen, fotografo norvegese, interessano le storie che stanno ai margini dell’informazione, la resistenza quotidiana di uomini e donne costretti a vivere in condizioni di difficoltà.

Jonas Bendiksen

Ha ricevuto premi prestigiosi (dall’Infinity dell’ICP al World Press Photo), collaborato a numerose testate giornalistiche (Newsweek, National Geographic Magazine, The Telegraph, tra le altre) e pubblicato due libri: Satellites (2006) e The Place We Live (2008), entrambi per le edizioni Aperture. Iwan Baan: The Way We Live. As these things go, I want to arrive at art exhibitions having done at least some homework.

Iwan Baan: The Way We Live

At the very minimum, knowing the name of the artist on view is considered a journalistic courtesy. But I would have loved to have come to Iwan Baan: The Way We Live at Hollywood's Perry Rubenstein Gallery a blank slate, completely unaware of Baan and his rock-star status in the architecture world, and naïve to the context in which the photographs on display originally appeared. If I weren't familiar with Baan — better still, if I weren't familiar with Herzog or de Meuron — what would I think seeing Bird's Nest #2 (a portrait of Beijing's iconic stadium in progress, dwarfing the workers in the foreground) breathing the same air as Los Angeles #1 (an aerial view of the title city)?

I might think them the works of an artist who draws parallels between a knot of steel beams and a knot of intersecting freeways, and exposes both the splendour and absurdity of these subjects in a single blink. Mussa Photographers Horst & Daniel Zielske present the city of Shanghai between fiction and reality as ‘The City of Tomorrow’ in a series of pictures.

In a long term project dating back to November 2002, the father-and-son duo have been documenting the Chinese city as an urban composition, a man-made architectural living space and environment of extraordinary gigantic dimensions. To create these brilliant images, they chose the architecture of the city’s streets as the focal point of their work. See the rest of the photographs after the jump.
