This is the second time we’re taking you to Portugal this month, and not without good reason. Architecture photographer Fernando Guerra has shared with us his recent work on a fantastic country house designed and constructed by architects Ana Cravino and Inês Cordovil (founding members of Lisbon-based SIA Arquitectura Studio) in collaboration with acclaimed Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus (of the award-winning Aires Mateus Studio). Situated near the small town of Melides, the residence is set atop a hill overlooking the Quinta da Fontinha (Fontinha Estate), and was conceived as a lookout or observation post – in a way reminiscent of the mansions built in medieval times by landlords and princes throughout the Mediterranean region to oversee their vast agricultural estates. Its identity is kept long beyond the material's resistance. An identity that allows to change, to replace, keeping all the values. The project develops two spaces: one to unwind with the support of a kitchen integrated in the same material of the walls; other as a sleeping area with a small bathroom and a shower. The construction is entirely finished in reused wood, subjected to the weather that will keep on changing it.

Aires Mateus . + cristina peres The school is now almost in two distinct centers: the north side (block A and B) where teaching focus areas, boardrooms, and support of teachers and the south side (block C) which houses the entrance to the school gyms , the Bar and Cantina.
This clear division, adapted to the new programs, practically coincides with the division proposed programmatic Park School's programs and so it was decided to focus areas and teaching, teachers and managers on the north side of the school, reserving the south side for an intervention deeper but also more open to the community and with the possibility of autonomous operation. It seemed to us also a clear need to maintain the existing architectural language of the school, who is not of great quality, presents a coherent and stable, as well as marking an epoch. The concept comes from the historical centres, that in its infinite variations allow distinct lodgings, lifestyles and different identities, variable, evolutionable by those who occupy them. Unity is created by the concept of living and not by modular repetition. The materials that define the spaces are classic: stone, wood, and concrete. The buildings have the same distance between themselves, repeating their external image, their height and width. The variation happens in their length and thus footprint on the platform.
