One of the many pleasures of writing about the history of games is receiving unexpected correspondence from the people whose work I study, sometimes people who are very surprised to learn that a pastime they briefly enjoyed decades ago has brought them to the attention of posterity. Such was the case with Craig VanGrasstek, whose 1974 Rules to the Game of Dungeon I covered on this blog (and in Playing at the World) as the earliest known Dungeons & Dragons variant. Craig wrote to me having long lost any copy of the Rules and understandably curious about my interest. This is easily explained: the Rules provide one of our earliest windows into fantasy role-playing as practiced by some of its first fans, a tradition that has survived as "Minneapolis Dungeon. " In the course of my exchange with Craig, he volunteered to make his work available to the readers of today.

The three play records that follow all date to the months after the publication of the Rules. Next is October 27, 1974: Con Books | Princecon. Here are all the Con Books and supplementary rules from past PrinceCon events. e-Reader PDFs are formatted for online viewing, including a PDF table of contents, hyperlinks, etc. It is our goal to eventually release all the con books in both e-Reader and printable format, though it may take quite some time to complete this effort. Printable PDFs or Word DOCs are the traditional printed con book format, with cross-references as page numbers instead of hyperlinks and a wider inside margin to allow for stapling or binding. The ones that are Word files contain macros (perhaps used to generate spell lists). Scanned PDFs are our initial import of the Con Books further back than our present electronic records extend.

Con Books Unabridged “Tome” of PrinceCon Currently there’s an effort underway to assemble a comprehensive PrinceCon manual, which could be used either for non-convention games, or for GMs at the convention. If you don’t ask, I don’t tell. Information must be ferreted out; it does not drop from the sky or announce itself with a chime. It works how I say it works because this is my world. I invented everything about it.

If you don’t tell me, that’s too damned bad. Never, ever, think that my world will only present challenges “commensurate with your abilities.” “Live to fight another day” is a time-honored and respected attitude to have. I am never arbitrary; players, on the other hand, often act stupidly. If a rule is constricting the fun, the rule needs to be bent. No idea is impossible. It works that way because I said so. If I trust you enough to not minutely scrutinize every single die roll (vs. my “babies” or creating your PC), why should I even listen to you carping about my rolling behind a screen? If you are not having fun, go home. Open Gaming & Third Parties — What's O.L.D. is N.E.W.
