Old Fangs by Adrien Merigeau. Beautiful soft-spoken film about a son’s attempt to reconnect with his estranged father. Part of the Sundance 2010 Online Short Film Program, which has been previously featured, Old Fangs is one of the few selected shorts which still can be screened online . The film tells the story of a young wolf on a journey with two of his friends into the woods, trying to reconnect with his estranged, over-mighty father. In flashback scenes we see glimpses of the wolf’s childhood which let the viewers know what might have happened in the past that was the reason for the failed father-son relationship. Old Fangs is a short which is more style over substance, although in a good way. We don’t need much story, the images and the minimalist insights into the characters lives and their interaction are enough to leave the viewer with a lot to think about.

Georg Csarmann is a filmmaker, new media creative, writer and performer based in Vienna, Austria. Short Film | Howl by Natalie Bettelheim. The Silence Beneath the Bark by Joanna Lurie. Heartwarming tale of two creatures exploring a new world. It’s almost summer, and we’re heading into the thick of the festival season. A pretty big one just wrapped up in Toronto over the weekend, the Worldwide Short Film Festival, which bills itself as the largest short film festival in North America and is an Academy Awards-qualifier to boot. None of the live-action winners are online, but I did spot this year’s Best Animated Film, a gentle and lovely film out of France, Le Silence Sous l’écorce by Joanna Lurie.

The film is pretty, and has some interesting sequences, but at 11 min it stretches the attention span a bit. If you’re a general fan of shorts you could probably skip, but if you’re an animation buff, like a few of us on staff here at SotW, you’ll definitely want to check it out. Co-Founder of Short of the Week, Sondhi lives in Brooklyn working as a Curator for Vimeo. City Paradise by Gaëlle Denis. A Japanese transplant finds herself in the cold heart of a gloomy and uninviting London. But there’s more that lies beyond the surface… Nominated for a 2005 BAFTA Award (the British Oscar), City Paradise captures the fear and uncertainty of new environments. A young woman’s first day in London leaves her with the unflattering impression of wet streets and starchy residents. The story takes a plunge into the depths of surrealism when the young woman stumbles upon an underground world full of interesting people and beautiful music.

She learns to see the beauty underneath the grime, and suddenly, all looks brighter. A carefully composed color scheme and the seamless combination of video and animation make this short a visual masterpiece. Denis’ most recent animated film, After the Rain (Passion Pictures), is now making the festival circuit. Andrew makes no attempt to hide his love for the magic art of animation.
