It has finally stopped raining (and snowing) for a few days here and I'm starting to get adjusted to having two little ones instead of one. I've been trying to get Tate's nursery completely finished, and these letters for the wall are part of the last few things. I figured at the rate I'm going, I'll probablly get it done just in time for me to change it again when he needs a big boy room. These were super easy and I am IN.LOVE. with the finish. I fell in love with these weathered zinc letters from Restoration Hardware...but at $69 each, it was out of the questions...on to Plan B. I started off by purchasing these letters at Joann's. Painted on a coat of black paint.
Then I broke out some other paint that I had...Ralph Lauren's Metallic Paint and some Acrylic in Burnt Umber. Several years ago I developed a new recipe for a sculptural material I call “paper mache clay.”
This material is so easy to use and so easy to make that I now use it exclusively for all my paper mache sculptures. The recipe has now gone “viral” and is being used by artists all over the world. It might be a bit more accurate to call this material “home-made air-dried cellulose-reinforced polymer clay,” but that’s way too hard to say (or type!) , so for now, let’s just call it paper mache clay. The first video below shows how to make the paper mache clay, and the second video answers some common questions that I’ve received from readers since I first developed this recipe.
I usually make mine fairly thin so it can be spread over an armature like frosting, by using less flour than the recipe calls for – but you can also make it thicker, with more flour, when you want more control over the modeling process.

What you'll need:one bag of rice (i used a 1 lb 12 oz bag) one fat quarter of muslin and one fat quarter of really cute fabric. (this particular fabric is moda) first you are going to cut two 14 x 7 inches rectangles out of your muslin (this will be your rice bag) sew together along three sides of your muslin pieces using a 1/4 seam allowance. turn it inside out and fill it with the whole bag of rice. fold in the raw edge in on itself and sew shut. your rice bag is done, so put it aside. now lets start working on your cover. grab your super cute fabric and cut out three different rectangles. one at 14 x 7 the second one at 10 x 7 and the third one at 8 x 7 now the two smaller rectangles are the back so you are going to fold over 1/4 inch once (on one of the 7 inch side) and press with an iron... place right sides together make sure you pin down all three pieces.
