By Fay Schlesinger Updated: 08:58 GMT, 25 September 2009 A controversial cooker that 'grows' meat and fish by heating animal cells in your kitchen claimed first prize in the Electrolux design competition tonight. The invention, called Cocoon, could develop food with the make-up and nutrients of real meat.

Mr Hederstierna, 27, said: 'This will create 100 per cent pure meat without the need for animals to be killed and with no risk of contamination. It will change everything.' [caption] A food generator is a popular concept in science fiction programmes such as Star Trek. Swedish industrial design student Rickard Hederstierna, 27, said it could tackle food shortages as the world's population spirals. And the glass cooker, which would heat pre-mixed food packets containing muscle cells, oxygen and nutrients, would put an end to messy and time-consuming preparation.

Competition panelist David Fisher, design director of consultantsSeymourpowell, described the invention as 'controversial'. Materia: Home. Stitz task stool by wilkhahn. The Stitz work stool by Wilkhahn does not fit easily into any category. Its a work stool, yes, but it has a pneumatic lift like a task chair - not a fixed height. And the base is unique, as it is not a static base. Its not a base with wheels, but a large sand bag like base that allows the stool to tilt, yet remain standing. What does that gain you? Its a stool that you can sit upon, or lean against. So you can use it at a stand up work station, or at a bar, or in a lab setting. Stitz by Wilkhahn. The architecture of early childhood.

Kindergarten Design by CEBRA. This new kindergarten design in Vonsild by the Danish architectural firm CEBRA attempts to provide a learning expience for young children stimulating their curiosity and creativity, the architecture facilitating this throughplay. "Using the building should be educational and this is why we have deliberately avoided typical building features. The children should learn from this very early stage that a house does not have to look like the typical child drawing with a pitch roof, a door in the middle and a window on each side of it.

This building has a jagged roof, it has no corners since everything is rounded and the main volumes have very few right angles. The kindergarten will demonstrate quite effectively that a building can look anyway you want it to. " - The Architects It is the architects' drawings which I find greatly interesting - and shows the rigorous thought process that went into the design. Here is my interpretation of these: The perceived scale of objects. Learning about colour. Architecture school shows student projects > UTSA Today > University of Texas at San Antonio. Architectural models (Photos by Stephanie Mota) (Feb. 20, 2004)--The UTSA School of Architecture hosts a visit Feb. 21-25 by a four-person team from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and a local observer. The visit is part of the accreditation renewal process for the professional program in architecture, a "4-years + 2-years" program leading to a master of architecture degree.

At the UTSA Downtown Campus, the visiting team will review School of Architecture materials, tour the facilities and meet with administrators, faculty, staff, students, the School of Architecture Advisory Council, alumni and local professionals. The team will determine whether the program meets the NAAB conditions for accreditation, including the 37 Student Performance Criteria, then write a report and forward recommendations to the NAAB board for a decision on the term of accreditation. BESIKTAS FISH MARKET. GAD ARCHITECTURE. Check out this project by Istanbul based firm GAD Architecture Text from the architects; Located in one of Istanbul's most populated and diverse neighborhoods, Beşiktaş is an eclectic area with a village-like atmosphere that is in the process of urban renewal.

The Beşiktaş Fish Market is located on a triangular site. It is an iconic venue where many locals and visitors buy fresh fish daily. The construction of the old fish market was in very poor shape and needed to be replaced. The design solution was to maintain its iconic neighborhood presence, while also reaffirming its welcoming feeling. GAD designed a triangular shaped concrete shell covering the entire site with large openings at street level. Italy’s forgotten Library – The Reading Rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. The Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze, Italy is one of two national libraries, along with the National Library in Rome. The library was founded in 1714 when Antonio Magliabechi, a famous Italian scholar, bequeathed his entire collection of books, encompassing approximately 30,000 volumes, to the city of Florence.

Since 1870, the library has collected copies of all Italian publications. Since 1935, the collections have been housed in the current library building, designed by Cesare Bazzaniu and V. Mazzei, located along the Arno River adjacent to the Basilica di Santa Crocé. Before this, they were found in various rooms belonging to the Uffizi Gallery. Today the Library stands almost forgotten by the wider Italian community, under-funded, poorly maintained and massively behind the times. The project aims to re-establish the old library as a national centre of learning. Ashley Clayton Tutor: Ben Cowd Sara Shafiei. High Street supermarket: a civic place in Whitechapel.

The project is a reflection upon the high street and the nature of shopping, a quintessential high street activity. As the place for everyday shopping has increasingly become the supermarket, the project develops a critical attitude to the way these buildings are designed and erected in our cities. Looking back to the Greek Agora, the Roman Forum, the medieval market square and the 19th century arcade, it is clear that shopping has always provided towns with places that take on significant civic roles.

The project asks why supermarkets cannot play such a role within our contemporary cities and what might allow this to happen. The proposal is sited on an urban block in Whitechapel, East London, which already includes a public library, a pub, a former brewery and a superstore. This anonymous industrial shed, surrounded by a car park, is transformed into a catalyst for public and domestic life. Pasar Seni Architecture School. What is Pasar Seni without its “Seni”(Art)? Pasar Seni area is part of Kuala Lumpur’s birth. It is transitional and moving, influx with shades of different culture, re-inventing itself and spontaneous.

However, Every time you pass by this city, you will wonder why its present character does not reflect its name “Seni”. Indeed, Pasar Seni has transformed from a cultural centre to a commercial centre. What if the forgotten city of Pasar Seni is taken over by the School of Architecture? Pasar Seni Architecture is a project that articulates in its contexture approach weaving together both the school programme and the urban context. Thus, the effort was to actually create an interactive programme integrating the people in Pasar Seni into the Architecture School, which will provoke some debate, challenging the idea of experimenting University Malaya School to be put in the busiest area of Pasar Seni. The special Study tries to explore the student’s working and living space. …Beyond a Wall (Sandy Row’s Community Drop-in Centre) ‘A wall’ a physical and mental divide that separated my site, part of a prominent business park, from the residents of the deprived inner community, of Sandy Row Belfast.

This 3.5m wall exposed the community’s abundant textural and materialistic history, but also the social behaviour and attitudes of the two communities present in the area. The business park brought a wealth and education to Sandy Row, which unfortunately is not shared with the vast neighbouring community. Consequently causing Sandy Row’s Britannic Drive wall to serve as design inspiration, provoking my architectural intention to create a scheme that would bridge the two communities, enabling interaction through the wall and therefore the exchange of ideas and skills. Maintaining the wall and the datum it provided for the site was of utmost importance. Playhouse by Aboday. The two-storey house has an exposed concrete exterior covered in part by climbing plants, and punctuated by slit windows and ceiling-height glazing. The house has a large thermal mass due to its concrete construction, relying on natural ventilation and shading, heat-resistant finishes, and a forty-millimeter wall cavity to prevent overheating during the summer. Furniture Design. Lighting Design. Sneak Peak: Newest of 10 LEGO Architecture Building Sets. Adding to their growing collection of architectural LEGO sets, the latest in the line will be the famous Robie House, one of the American Institute of Architects’ top ten most significant works of architecture from the 20th Century. This Modernism-influenced, Prairie Style classic features quintessential Frank Lloyd Wright design choices including a strong horizontal emphasis, winding entryway and experiential rather than centralized interior plan – and hits the stores next month.

Other LEGO buildings by America’s most well-known architect include the Guggenheim Museum, which spun the traditional flat-floored, rectangular-walled museum concept into a dynamic spiral … … as well as his most world-renowned work of all: Falling Water, a gorgeous stone-and-concrete house overhanging a waterfall in a picturesque forest. Faux Foliage: Fake-Tree Facade for Privacy, Shade & Decor. So is it modern … or does a single decorative splash change it entirely? Or as Robert Venturi might put it: a duck, decorated shed or something in between?

The boxy shape, minimalist structure and simple white-and-red color scheme all suggest modernism, but the striking built-in window treatments along the front and side (mostly-glass) walls indicate otherwise. Titled the Tattoo House by Maynard Architects, this open-plan abode lets in lots of daylight but has custom-cut, high-quality window stickers to temper the sun’s rays with tree-like cut-outs. During the day, these prevent light from getting in – at night, it selectively stops light from projecting out for an opposite visual effect. In both cases, though, privacy is protected on the more-obscured upper level (which has sight-lines leading to neighboring properties) while leaving views open along the bottom. Share architecture -
