It has been the policy of U.S. presidents over the last three decades to state that a nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable. Yet as Iran moves closer to achieving that goal, political leaders, including key Obama administration officials such as Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, have begun to waver. They now speak more frequently about the potentially disastrous consequences of an Israeli or U.S. military strike on Iran's nuclear program than about the dangers of a nuclear Iran. Matthew Kroenig thus deserves credit for advancing the argument that the repercussions of a military attack on Iran's nuclear program are a worthwhile risk, given the far more dangerous consequences of Iran getting the bomb (" Time to Attack Iran ," January/February 2012). There are, however, problems with Kroenig's strategy for avoiding the nightmare scenario. http://www.aei.org/article/foreign-and-defense-policy/regional/middle-east-and-north-africa/the-case-for-regime-change-in-iran/

Russia warns Israel not to attack Iran | Pakalert Press

Russia warned Israel not to attack Iran over its nuclear program , saying on Wednesday that military action would have catastrophic consequences. “Of course any possible military scenario against Iran will be catastrophic for the region and for the whole system of international relations,” Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said. “Therefore I hope Israel understands all these consequences … and they should also consider the consequences of such action for themselves,” Gatilov said at a news conference. Gatilov’s comments came as Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that Tehran’s nuclear course would not change regardless of international sanctions, assassinations or other pressures. “With God’s help, and without paying attention to propaganda , Iran’s nuclear course should continue firmly and seriously … Pressures, sanctions and assassinations will bear no fruit. No obstacles can stop Iran’s nuclear work.”

Politicians pivot WTO ruling to Air Force tanker fight | Boeing and Aerospace News - seattlepi.com

Washington politicians Wednesday immediately applied the World Trade Organization’s ruling that European Union nations illegally subsidized Airbus programs to the Air Force’s KC-X aerial refueling tanker fight. The tanker competition pits Boeing, which would assemble its 767-based tanker in Everett, Wash., against EADS North America, which would assemble its Airbus A330-based tanker in Mobile, Ala. U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., noted that Congress earlier this month passed his proposed provision requiring the Air Force to consider illegal subsidies in the tanker competition. http://blog.seattlepi.com/aerospace/2010/06/30/politicians-pivot-wto-ruling-to-air-force-tanker-fight/

Government Operations

The World Trade Organization has released an interim ruling on U.S. subsidies to Boeing. This confidential report has been given to the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and Boeing has released this statement in response to media reports and public statements by members of Congress. Nothing in today's public reports on the European case against the U.S. even begins to compare to the $20 billion in illegal subsidies that the WTO found last June that Airbus/EADS has received. Attempts by Airbus to link the two cases together is like comparing apples to oranges and we urge Airbus to comply with the clear and definitive ruling that has been made against them by the WTO. Below please find information on the recent interim ruling including Congressional press releases, news articles, and 3rd party comments.

According to traditional geomancy, for the first time since 1952, the year will be associated with the element water. Sixty years ago, in the throes of the Korean War, Beijing could scarcely have been further from the water. Today, however, China’s shipyards are humming and the PLA Navy (PLAN) is sustaining operations half a world away in the Gulf of Aden. Beginning with the major potential newsmakers, here are 12 key things to watch for and what they mean:

Siah brook - ruins of a Carmelite Monastery

The Carmelites are a Catholic order of monks, one of the oldest in the Holy Land, and named after Mount Carmel. In about 1200 their first church (St. Brocardus) was built in the Siah (Siach, Siakh) brook located on the western slopes of mount Carmel. After the Arabs defeated the Crusaders, they were butchered and their church was destroyed. The survivors later emigrated to Europe, returned only in the 17th C to another area in Mount Carmel - Stella Maris. Location and Aerial map:

Mossad chief holds secret U.S. meetings on Iran nuclear threat, Senate panel reveals - Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News

Mossad chief Tamir Pardo held secret talks with top U.S. officials in recent days, cursory comments made during a public Senate hearing indicated on Tuesday. The clandestine Washington visit was exposed during a hearing of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, which was participated by CIA Director David Petraeus, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and Dianne Feinstein, who chairs the Senate panel. During the meeting, Feinstein asked Clapper whether or not Israel intended to strike Iran's nuclear facilities, with the top U.S. intelligence official answering that he would rather discuss the issue behind closed doors.
An assessment by U.S. spy agencies concludes that Iran is prepared to launch terrorist attacks inside the United States, highlighting new risks as the Obama administration escalates pressure on Tehran to halt its alleged pursuit of an atomic bomb. In congressional testimony Tuesday , U.S. intelligence officials indicated that Iran has crossed a threshold in its adversarial relationship with the United States. While Iran has long been linked to attacks on American targets overseas, U.S. officials said they see troubling significance in Tehran’s alleged role in a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington last year. Highlights from a series of potentially volatile incidents U.S. officials said they have seen no intelligence to indicate that Iran is actively plotting attacks on U.S. soil. Iran Speaks of 'Major' Nuclear Announcement, Ahmadinejad Says Details to be Revealed Soon [VIDEO] - International Business Times

The President of Iran has made a startling announcement... one sure to set alarm bells ringing throughout the White House, the European Union (EU) and in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). According to multiple reports, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by state media, on Saturday, as saying his country would reveal "several major achievements in the nuclear domain" within the next few days. The stand-off between an Iranian government intent on pursuing what they claim as a peaceable nuclear enrichment programme and the bloc of Western nations, including the U.S. and the UK, has been running for nearly a decade now. The U.S. and the UK, along with the United Nations (UN), the IAEA and the EU not only view announcements of peaceable intent with scepticism but on occasion have also directly accused the Middle Eastern country of both actively harbouring terrorists and pursuing a nuclear weapons programme.
