It has been the policy of U.S. presidents over the last three decades to state that a nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable. Yet as Iran moves closer to achieving that goal, political leaders, including key Obama administration officials such as Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, have begun to waver. They now speak more frequently about the potentially disastrous consequences of an Israeli or U.S. military strike on Iran's nuclear program than about the dangers of a nuclear Iran. Matthew Kroenig thus deserves credit for advancing the argument that the repercussions of a military attack on Iran's nuclear program are a worthwhile risk, given the far more dangerous consequences of Iran getting the bomb (" Time to Attack Iran ," January/February 2012). There are, however, problems with Kroenig's strategy for avoiding the nightmare scenario.

Russia warned Israel not to attack Iran over its nuclear program , saying on Wednesday that military action would have catastrophic consequences. “Of course any possible military scenario against Iran will be catastrophic for the region and for the whole system of international relations,” Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said. “Therefore I hope Israel understands all these consequences … and they should also consider the consequences of such action for themselves,” Gatilov said at a news conference. Gatilov’s comments came as Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that Tehran’s nuclear course would not change regardless of international sanctions, assassinations or other pressures. “With God’s help, and without paying attention to propaganda , Iran’s nuclear course should continue firmly and seriously … Pressures, sanctions and assassinations will bear no fruit. No obstacles can stop Iran’s nuclear work.”

BANK of China said yesterday it will buy a 20 percent stake in La Compagnie Financiere Edmond de Rothschild for 236.3 million euros (US$340 million) and the two will develop private banking and asset-management services. “This partnership forms part of Bank of China’s global development strategy,” Bank of China chairman Xiao Gang said in a statement. “We expect to further strengthen our asset management operations and product design capabilities in private banking business, and widen the product and service offerings to our clients.” Beijing-based Bank of China said it sees a promising future for private banking and other services for China’s newly affluent amid rapid economic growth. “With the rapidly growing global demand for wealth management services, private banking and asset management are becoming increasingly important parts of the Chinese financial services industry,” the statement said. Bank of China said it hoped the deal would strengthen its presence in Europe.

Washington politicians Wednesday immediately applied the World Trade Organization’s ruling that European Union nations illegally subsidized Airbus programs to the Air Force’s KC-X aerial refueling tanker fight. The tanker competition pits Boeing, which would assemble its 767-based tanker in Everett, Wash., against EADS North America, which would assemble its Airbus A330-based tanker in Mobile, Ala. U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., noted that Congress earlier this month passed his proposed provision requiring the Air Force to consider illegal subsidies in the tanker competition.
