The case for regime change in Iran. It has been the policy of U.S. presidents over the last three decades to state that a nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable. Yet as Iran moves closer to achieving that goal, political leaders, including key Obama administration officials such as Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, have begun to waver. They now speak more frequently about the potentially disastrous consequences of an Israeli or U.S. military strike on Iran's nuclear program than about the dangers of a nuclear Iran. Matthew Kroenig thus deserves credit for advancing the argument that the repercussions of a military attack on Iran's nuclear program are a worthwhile risk, given the far more dangerous consequences of Iran getting the bomb ("Time to Attack Iran," January/February 2012).

There are, however, problems with Kroenig's strategy for avoiding the nightmare scenario. Kroenig bases his argument on Israel's successful limited strikes against Iraq's Osirak reactor in 1981 and against Syria's Al Kibar reactor in 2007. Russia warns Israel not to attack Iran. Russia warned Israel not to attack Iran over its nuclear program, saying on Wednesday that military action would have catastrophic consequences. “Of course any possible military scenario against Iran will be catastrophic for the region and for the whole system of international relations,” Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said. “Therefore I hope Israel understands all these consequences … and they should also consider the consequences of such action for themselves,” Gatilov said at a news conference. Gatilov’s comments came as Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that Tehran’s nuclear course would not change regardless of international sanctions, assassinations or other pressures.

“With God’s help, and without paying attention to propaganda, Iran’s nuclear course should continue firmly and seriously … Pressures, sanctions and assassinations will bear no fruit. No obstacles can stop Iran’s nuclear work.” US aid has only fed

He addresses Pakistan’s key domestic political concerns, speaks openly about relations with the US, India, China, Afghanistan, the Taleban and the future path his country should take. Q: How would you list priority-wise the key areas that need immediate attention in Pakistan’s socio- economic sectors? A: “Energy is Pakistan’s biggest crisis and affects agriculture and industry and, therefore, employment. Second is governance itself which includes fighting corruption. Do you feel that not doing enough to eradicate militant outfits has been Pakistan’s biggest nemesis? “When Pakistan joined the Afghan jihad and supported these jihadists groups, they should have been disarmed at the end of the Soviet jihad, but they were not. "There was bound to be a problem. Do you think Pakistan should stop taking US aid?

Politicians pivot WTO ruling to Air Force tanker fight | Boeing and Aerospace News. Washington politicians Wednesday immediately applied the World Trade Organization’s ruling that European Union nations illegally subsidized Airbus programs to the Air Force’s KC-X aerial refueling tanker fight. The tanker competition pits Boeing, which would assemble its 767-based tanker in Everett, Wash., against EADS North America, which would assemble its Airbus A330-based tanker in Mobile, Ala. U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., noted that Congress earlier this month passed his proposed provision requiring the Air Force to consider illegal subsidies in the tanker competition.

“Today’s announcement validates what we have been saying for quite some time, massive illegal subsidies to Airbus have distorted the market and given Airbus an unfair advantage that is costing American jobs,” Inslee said in a statement. U.S. Washington Gov. The WTO ruling demonstrates why the Pentagon should consider the fact that one of the bids for the new refueling tanker will be an illegally subsidized airplane.

Iran, perceiving threat from West, willing to attack on U.S. soil, U.S. intelligence report finds.

U.S. officials said they have seen no intelligence to indicate that Iran is actively plotting attacks on U.S. soil. But Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr. said the thwarted plot “shows that some Iranian officials — probably including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — have changed their calculus and are now more willing to conduct an attack in the United States in response to real or perceived U.S. actions that threaten the regime.” The warning about Iran’s more aggressive stance was included in written testimony that Clapper submitted to Congress on Tuesday as part of the intelligence community’s annual assessment of the nation’s most serious security threats.

On other fronts, U.S. intelligence officials said that al-Qaeda has been badly degraded, but they expressed rising concern overalleged cyber-espionage by China, the leadership transition innuclear-armed North Korea and the uncertain prospects for Afghanistan after U.S. forces eventually depart. Iran Speaks of 'Major' Nuclear Announcement, Ahmadinejad Says Details to be Revealed Soon [VIDEO] Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaks during a ceremony to mark the 33rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, in Tehran's Azadi square February 11, 2012.

Ahmadinejad said on Saturday the Islamic Republic would soon announce "very important" achievements in the nuclear field, state TV reported. The President of Iran has made a startling announcement... one sure to set alarm bells ringing throughout the White House, the European Union (EU) and in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). According to multiple reports, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by state media, on Saturday, as saying his country would reveal "several major achievements in the nuclear domain" within the next few days. The stand-off between an Iranian government intent on pursuing what they claim as a peaceable nuclear enrichment programme and the bloc of Western nations, including the U.S. and the UK, has been running for nearly a decade now. Must Read: Iran To Make Major Nuclear Announcement Within Days, Ahmadinejad Says. TEHRAN – Iran will soon unveil "big new" nuclear achievements, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Saturday while reiterating Tehran's readiness to revive talks with the West over the country's controversial nuclear program.

Ahmadinejad spoke at a rally in Tehran as tens of thousands of Iranians marked the 33rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution that toppled the pro-Western monarchy and brought Islamic clerics to power. Ahmadinejad did not elaborate on the upcoming announcement but insisted Iran would never give up its uranium enrichment, a process that makes material for reactors as well as weapons. The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is aimed at producing atomic weapons, a charge Tehran denies, insisting it's geared for peaceful purposes only, such as energy production.

"Within the next few days the world will witness the inauguration of several big new achievements in the nuclear field," Ahmadinejad told the crowd in Tehran's famous Azadi, or Freedom, square. US officials believe Iran sanctions will fail, making military action likely | World news. Officials in key parts of the Obama administration are increasingly convinced that sanctions will not deter Tehran from pursuing its nuclear programme, and believe that the US will be left with no option but to launch an attack on Iran or watch Israel do so.

The president has made clear in public, and in private to Israel, that he is determined to give sufficient time for recent measures, such as the financial blockade and the looming European oil embargo, to bite deeper into Iran's already battered economy before retreating from its principal strategy to pressure Tehran. But there is a strong current of opinion within the administration – including in the Pentagon and the state department – that believes sanctions are doomed to fail, and that their principal use now is in delaying Israeli military action, as well as reassuring Europe that an attack will only come after other means have been tested. "The White House wants to see sanctions work. This is not the Bush White House. UN Nuke Agency Reports Failed Iran Talks. VIENNA – The U.N. nuclear agency on Wednesday acknowledged its renewed failure in trying to probe suspicions that Tehran has worked secretly on atomic arms, in a statement issued shortly after an Iranian general warned of a pre-emptive strike against any nation that threatens Iran.

The double signs of defiance reflected continued Iranian determination not to bow to demands that it defuse suspicions about its nuclear activities despite rapidly growing international sanctions imposed over its refusal to signal it is ready to compromise. With the International Atomic Energy Agency already failing to dent Iranian stonewalling in talks that ended just three weeks ago, hopes had been muted that the latest effort would be any more successful even before the IAEA issued its statement. The fact that the communique was issued early Wednesday, shortly after midnight and just after the IAEA experts left Tehran, reflected the urgency the agency attached to telling its side of the story.
