A few days later, angry demonstrators gathered outside parliament offices in the capital of Nairobi.

They carried placards reading "greedy hyenas" and hollered "thieves" as members of parliament dashed into their offices. Am. Kenyan Cloud. 28 dead after Nigeria church attacks - Africa  By AFP Bomb attacks on churches during Christmas services, including one outside the capital, have killed at least 28 people in Nigeria amid spiralling violence claimed by an Islamist group. A purported spokesman for Islamist group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a bombing of the church outside the Nigerian capital and other violence in recent days that has stoked fear and anger in Africa's most populous nation. Authorities have been seemingly unable to stop the attacks despite heavy-handed military crackdowns and claims of arrests of Boko Haram members. The area around the scene of the blast outside the capital Abuja, which killed at least 27, degenerated into chaos after the explosion, with angry youths starting fires and threatening to attack a nearby police station. Police shot into the air to disperse them and closed a major highway. Holes could be seen in the wall of the St. "As I reached the last entrance, some people met me for blessings and suddenly I heard a bomb blast.

Kenya's Makau sets marathon world record in Berlin. Daily Nation: - Politics |Kibaki to name Budget chief. By Emeka-Mayaka Gekara emayaka@ke.nationmedia.com President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga are from Monday expected to nominate candidates for controller of budget and auditor-general. “The two are committed to execute their mandates within the deadlines of the Fifth Schedule as the country marks one year since the enactment of the new Constitution,” said a State House official who spoke to the Nation on condition of anonymity. The chairperson of the panel that interviewed candidates for the post of auditor-general, Ms Carol Kigen, last week handed over the list of individuals to President Kibaki and Mr Odinga. Once the nominees are identified, their names will be tabled in Parliament for vetting and approval before their appointment. According to the law, the panel was supposed to forward names of three nominees for each position to the President and Prime Minister who, after consultation, will choose one person for each position.

Daily Nation: - DN2 |‘Plan your family or we will halt free primary education project’ By EDITH FORTUNATE efortunate@ke.nationmedia.com Gorety Awinja, 20, cuddles her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter. The wailing child is hungry, but her mother is seven months pregnant and, therefore, unable to find work; so there is no food. Neither Gorety nor her husband has a steady job, neither of them went to secondary school... and none of them believes in family planning. By the time their first born celebrates her second birthday, her younger sibling will be four months old, and Gorety could be pregnant again. The family will have grown, but its finances are most unlikely to have improved.

With little education, the job opportunities available to both father and mother are limited and low-paying. Gorety and her husband are proving sociologists right: the poorer a family is in these parts of the world, the likelier it is to be huge. That is bad news for a country grappling with a staggering economy and overwhelming levels of poverty. Daily Nation: - Sports |Kenya just too good for Egypt. By Ayumba Ayodi sayodi@ke.nationmedia.com Kenya beat Egypt 3-1 to win Pool A in the final group matches of the Africa Cup of Nations women’s volleyball at Africa Nazarene University on Sunday. Kenya, in search of their seventh title, will now face Senegal - who finished second in Pool B - in the semi-finals this afternoon.

Defending champions Algeria, who thrashed Rwanda 3-0 on Saturday, face Egypt in the other semi-final. Kenya won the first set 25-14 and the second 25-20, but Egypt narrowly won the third 26-24. The hosts were however just too good for the North Africans as they easily claimed the fourth set 25-17. In another match, Senegal rallied from two sets down to beat Tunisia 3-2 (20-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-22 and 15-12). The victory saw Senegal finish second in Pool B with seven points. “I have high respect for experienced Kenya,” said Senegal coach Amadou Sene. “There record stands out but anything can happen. “We are not underrating any team.
