GANESH

Also called Ganapati, Ganesha is one of the most popular Hindu Gods. His name means Lord of the Ganas, who were dwarf followers of Shiva. Lord Ganesha represents the call to spiritual power ~ he has been prayed to, worshipped and adored in one form or another since time began, as it is said that time began with his creation. Ganesha's mother Parvati found him in her hand while wiping perspiration from her body after bathing. Indeed Ganesha was born with a corpulent body, said to contain within it all the matter of the universe.

At once Vishnu, God of Love, set forth to look for another head, and returned with the head of Indra's elephant Airavata. In his hand Ganesha wields a noose and goad, and he holds a bowl of sweets. Ganesha's four arms stand for his immense power in helping Humanity. Ganesh resides on the mental plane. Sounds like a useful God to have on your side! The beloved elephant-faced-Deity popularly known as Ganesha has intrigued thinking men all over the world, all through the ages even unto the present day.

The sacred texts give a variety of stories narrating the sequence of Ganesha's birth. The most popular being the one mentioning that Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvati as a guardian to her privacy: Incensed by the refusal of her husband to respect her privacy, to the extent of entering her private chambers even while she was having her bath, Parvati decided to settle matters once and for all. Ganesha: The Elephant-Headed God. All Tantric and spiritual worship in the Hindu tradition begins with the invocation of Lord Ganesha (or Lord Ganesh), the elephant-headed god.

Ganesha became the Lord (Isha) of all existing beings (Gana) after winning a contest from his brother Kartikay. When given the task to race around the universe, Ganesha did not start the race like Kartikay did, but simply walked around Shiva and Parvati, both his father and mother as the source of all existence (more about this story here). Ganesha: Lord of Success - About the Hindu Elephant-Deity

This not only suggests the importance of Ganesha, but also shows how popular and pervasive this deity is in the minds of the masses. The Lord of Success The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha has an elephantine countenance with a curved trunk and big ears, and a huge pot-bellied body of a human being. Christmas traditions & customs round the world. How differen

We asked some of our friends to explain what happens in their countries. This is what they told us: Belgium On 6th December Sinterklaas or Saint-Nicholas is celebrated, which is an entirely different holiday from Christmas. Santa Claus in Belgium is called de Kerstman or le Père Noël and he does come around on Christmas day to bring children presents. Small family presents are given at Christmas too, under the tree, or in stockings near the fire-place, to be found in the morning. Brazil. Christmas Traditions Around the World at Santa's Net.
