WEF Scenario Planning

http://www.weforum.org/issues/strategic-foresight The Strategic Foresight team engages Forum communities in strategic dialogues to understand and address complex and uncertain long-term challenges. The work is inter-organizational and multistakeholder in terms of governance and participation, and provides a space in which communities, common understanding and trust can emerge. Beyond creating awareness about plausible alternative scenarios, questioning mental models and improving the robustness of decision-making, the work has been useful in developing a systemic understanding of challenges and to map and examine paradigms. This project explores possible political and economic implications of resource availability for business and government stakeholders over the coming two decades. It focuses on the role of interconnections between resources, and the frameworks and solutions that can be used to resolve resource dilemmas. The issue of refugees and asylum-seekers provokes heated public debate in many countries around the world, including in Australia. On 14 February 2012, in an address in the Lowy Institute's Distinguished Speaker Series, The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, examined emerging developments and trends in forced displacement around the world and the complex, inter-related factors which cause people to flee their homes in search of safety, security and protection. He gave his vision as to how States, working with UNHCR and the United Nations, can more effectively address the humanitarian protection and human security imperatives of forced displacement in ways that also respond to States' legitimate concerns about their own security and that of their people. http://www.lowyinstitute.org/

Consider my very crude, edited, back-of-the-envelope take on a few of the criteria outlined in the Failed States index, one by one. http://blogs.hbr.org/haque/

What is money? It's not easy to define. Once commodities or precious metals were used as money. More recently, it's been made from paper or metal and its intrinsic value has had no relationship to the value it represents. http://www.abc.net.au/money/vault/programs.htm#prog1
